Mill FC, 7.30pm this Sunday - who can make it?
I'll be back for this one.

We should probably start looking into getting a friendly for Feb 11th cos we'll be free that day due to Brompton dropping out.

I hope to make it as a sub for this game, maybe play a few mins at the end if needed. Not too sure yet, hamstring seems fine but havent kicked a ball yet so that could be a different story.

will make much of a difference.

Let me know how you feel, try a few stretches maybe over the next few days, see how it pans out.

If you're not a hundred percent let me know.

We lost 4-1 but I have to say, a more encouraging performance as a team.

Yeh, there’s only so much positives you can take from a 4-1 defeat, but we were more organized than at times in the past, and we could’ve fallen to pieces, but as it was we were still pressing right to the end. Conceding such a poor goal right after half-time was the killer blow. You have to hand it to them for their first goal, at this level there’s not much you can expect to do against a well-worked free like that.

I make it that we only had 2 or 3 shots apart from the goal and that’s just not enough. After thinking about it I reckon we did actually have some composure cos we did actually string some passes together – thing is it was generally just inside our half and we rarely made the incisive ball to put the strikers away. It’s well frustrating playing up front living off scraps but in hindsight I can remember several little moves, particularly between lepo and sav that were one pass away from a decent through ball. Same approach with a little more incisiveness and we’ll start making more chances. Darragh was making loads of smart runs and just needs better service to be able to show what he can do. I agree that when under pressure in our half it has to go long, but not into touch – a diagonal ball to corner flag gives a striker a run and might get us a throw-in.

Too many times they had not one but 2 midfielders without a marker within 5 yards from our kick-outs – happened just as much in the 2nd half as the first. We’re down a man on kickouts as a centre-half has to take the kicks, so full-backs should be tucking in, but more important is that all their men have one of ours goalside right in front of them. Mark coming back next week should let Neil back into the centre which will tighten it up a bit, and with Keith holding he should be able to push forward. Add Enda on a wing back into that midfield and it’s looking up. Thought Brian did very well when he came on and looked prepared to take a touch and maybe take on a man which is what we need more of. Bottom line is Mill FC had more players willing to put a foot on it and take their time and often try beat the man, and they did it in the right places. And again, look to Shay as an example of what each of us should be putting in tackles.

From watching from the sidelines you can get a much better view of everything which I didnt when playing. I noticed several things which I think are key to why we aren't doing as well as we should be doing. And lets face it, we are far better players than we represent on that pitch.

All basic things that we can get right with a small bit of effort.

We need to relax on the ball, keep the concentration....get the first touch right (this is so important, first touch kill the ball, look up, second touch pass whatever). This leads on to names and shouts....Still not enough shouting....time, turn, man on whatever. Helps out so much knowing whats going on around you.

Start of the first half, there was some great passing and movement at the back and midfield but as Jules said, lacked the killer pass. In fairness, the speed of the surface took a great through ball by Sav way down out of touch. Its a little tricky to get the right weight on a pass on that surface.

Making space and making yourself available. When we get the ball in midfield, we're nearly always facing our goal, which obviously means someone has to show for the ball to take it off him and then work it up, should be the wingers.
Watching the game, I think we're a bit sluggish when we get the ball which allows the opposition time to get in position and close us down quickly...we should be putting the pressure on them.

As soon as we get the ball, we need to be alert, show for the ball, or make runs...defenders push up etc. Everybody has something to do all the time...for example, when they get the ball, wingers tuck in make it tighter for them to play...when we get the ball wingers go wide and break...this should be automatic.

A lot of the time last night we were not first to the ball, and their sharpness was slightly better. They were winning a lot of 50/50's. Which definately could be fixed with a bit of fitness, and sharpness.

A small thing with the defenders, if your man is running across the goal, switch men with the central defender.....keep the shape. We were good at defending the corners last night but werent quick enough to close down players at the edge of the box....this led to the second goal I think.

Between the goalie and the defenders there wasnt enough communication which led to a few unnecessary corners and thrown ins. A few more simple early shouts would cut this out.

I don't mean to sound too negative, (i include myself in a lot of it) but I honestly believe that a few more matches or training sessions will cut a lot of this out and we will start to play the way we know we can. We have the basis for a decent solid team. There were a lot of positives also last night. Some good running by the two full backs, great commitment by Shay...some good passing combinations in the centre, and good running up front...darragh got into some great space a lot of the time, just wasn't able to get the service.

We should definately try and get a training session together...it would be a huge help.

    End of rant!

Some good points there! I agree about the midweek. Even if its only a 5 a side between ourselves,or a game of 2 touch or something, I think we should be playing together more often than once a week. DCU have 8 5-a side astro pitches. What would be stopping ten of us playing for an hour some night during the week. Realistically, you're not going to get lads out during the week for pure training sessions,,...especially when its dark out.
