Does anybody know at what age a puppy should be hip scored by a vet?

Hip scoring is basically an assessment of (usually) a dog's hips for signs of hip dysplasia - abnormal development of the hips. It is done based on x-rays and involves a number of complicated measurements of angles and also looking for different signs of hip-dysplasia already present. The method of assessment varies between different hip-scoring systems used around the world.

Basically, the purpose of the scheme is to assess the degree of hip-dysplasia in a particular dog to decide whether the dog should be used for breeding or not. Hip dysplasia is caused in part by genetic inheritance so breeding dogs with poor hip-scores is not advised. Although breeding from dogs with good hip scores does not guarantee the pups will not suffer hip dysplasia as other environmental factors also play a role. Hip scoring is done for lots of different breeds, particularly those which commonly suffer hip-dysplasia, such as the Labrador, Newfoundland etc. Elbow scoring is another type of assessment done on various breeds known to suffer elbow dysplasia.

The hip scoring method used in Ireland cannot be done on dogs younger on 12 months as their hips are not yet fully developed. It is often recommended that hip scoring should be carried out from 18 months.
