    Hi all,

A friend of mine was asking me for some advice on a laptop. He's not too sure what make or model to go for and said he has been searching around for a while.

    Budget: 800 - 1000 euro
Use: Word processing, multimedia, BB internet access... nothing too stressful
    Requirements Large hard-drive, 1GB+ RAM

I recommended a Dell as they have good customer warranty and support. also they can be customised to the users requirements. He agrees with me on this but wants to look further afield and see what else is out there. He previously owned a Sony Viao but it died on him after about 4 years.

    So anybody got any recommendations?

    Thanks in advance

    Hiya,

New in here so be gentle!

I've recently started using a MacBook - white one without the DVD burner - burns CDs and plays back DVDs though. Great machine for what I need it for - sounds very similar to your friend's needs - wordprocessing, multimedia, wireless internet, firewire, usb etc. The standard machine comes with a trial version of iWork which has all the Office functionality you need, but to be honest, there's a free version of office called NeoOffice which does all the same stuff as the windows version.

Depends what you're comfortable with I suppose, it didn't take more than a couple of days to get used to the OS, dead easy and pretty much sets itself up as regards networking, internet, and the bonus of no viruses.

Is your friend a student or working ing a VAT registered company? There's an educational discount available which might bring it into his price range, and if he can get the VAT off, even better. €990 with 1GB ram ex VAT.

    See ya
