    Ryanair 'won't move Dublin desks'
    January 09, 2007 19:31

Ryanair has accused a number of airlines of operating a fuel surcharge scam for failing to reduce surcharges now that the price of oil has fallen dramatically.

Speaking at the launch of two new routes from Dublin Airport, chief executive Michael O'Leary said the price of oil had fallen back from about $78 a barrel to around $53. But, he said, a number of airlines, including Aer Lingus, had not reduced their surcharges.

Aer Lingus said today they were closely monitoring the continuous impositions of fuel surchages in the context of lower oil prices.

Asked about facilities at Dublin Airport, Mr O'Leary said he had no plans to move Ryanair's check-in facilities to a new purpose-built area in the basement of the terminal, which will be up and running by the end of the month. In what appeared to be a challenge to the Dublin Airport Authority, he said he would need to see 'incentives' to encourage him to do so.

The Dublin Airport Authority said today it has been in discussions about Area 14 with Ryanair since last summer.

DAA said it should be sufficient incentive for Ryanair to be able to expand its business at specific locations in Dublin Airport and to provide greater comfort and efficiency for its passengers.

Mr O'Leary also described the proposal by Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny to build a second airport in Dublin as insane. He said Dublin's population was not big enough to sustain a second airport.

Ryanair is to launch two new services from Dublin to Poland from May. The airline will fly to Bydgoszcz and Gdansk.

It also increased frequencies on routes from Dublin to Bratislava, Biarritz, Carcassonne, Kaunas, Krakow, Malaga, Murcia, Riga and Rome.

I totally agree with him on this one. Adding a second airport to Dublin just makes life awkward for the passenger. Build T2, knock T1 and rebuild it on-site.

Yeah, Michael O'Leary claims that Gatwick airport caters for more passengers than Dublin Airport each year with only one runway & terminal, is that true?

Ryanair get more publicity for their low cost airline by saying that they 'won't move Dublin desks'

Ryanair complain about companies scamming customers out of money with oil, yet noone mentions Ryanairs baggage charge, checkin fees etc?

That said, they're still usually cheaper.

Gatwick actually has two runways IIRC but are only allowed operate 08L/26R (shorter and no ILS) when 08R/26L is closed due to a deal with local residents years ago for no dual runways before 2019. I believe BAA would like to get out of it but it would be politically tricky obviously.

MOL did say that he wouldn't move "without incentives". There's always a price with Ryanair! Make it worth Michaels while and he'll be packed and gone in the morning.

...which would require the building of a new runway because 09L/26R is too close to 08R/26L to operate as a parallel runway.

Gatwick is a world leader in single runway operations, the 2nd busiest airport in the Uk and sixth busiest in Europe (in terms of passenger numbers)

They'll move alright, but as my earlier post indicated, it is just a way of them getting more publicity. The press conference in question was to announce new routes to Poland, but by mentioning the new check-in area, Fine Gael's proposal of a second airport, and the proposed Metro line, he got a lot more publicity. This thread is proof of it. Would there have been a "Ryanair announces new Polish routes" thread if that was all he mentioned? Would he have been on the front page of the papers if that was all he mentioned. Of course not, but my making an issue out of something, he had more coverage, so even the new routes, even if they were lower down in the particular newspaper articles written, got more publicity than they would have. It works every time!

reckless, absolutely right, just making the point that there is only one "usable" runway but with a google shot of gatwick some might be a little confused :D
