Top of the Rocafella centre is considerably more impressive and less hassle than the Empire State Building. Far better views in my opinion. Would also suggest going to the top of either during the day and during the night time.

IMO, Woodbury Commons is better than Jersey Gardens. Seems to be a better selection of shops and better prices - in my experience anyway.

I would also recommend the helicopter trips from the south tip of the island. I would love to do the long one that brings you over the whole island but no one was interested in the crowd I was with. Ended up donig the one that goes around the Statue of Liberty.

There is also some pretty impressive views from the Staten Island Ferry.

Food wise. I would recommend Virgil's BBQ just off Time Square. It is just down the side of Toys r Us. The food is great and the cocktails are great value for money :) Will literally knock you out ;)

I also went to a steakhouse called Ben Benson's. It was around 51st street between 6th and 7th I think. Prices are steep enough but the food is amazing. Got a fillet steak there on two occassions and they were both to die for.

That McSorley's place is a pretty decent bar but I would recommend getting there early if going on the weekend.

This is also another pretty decent bar:

Also spent a night here - really nice bar. Sorta porterhouse affair.

Been there before and done Empire state by day, so night time is on my list. Rocafella centre is also on the list to-do this time.

Helicopter ride is a must .. whatever I can afford :)

Will grab a look at those bars too.

    Thanks for the tips :P

Ah, am so jealous, NY is my all-time favourite city!
Would reccomend Ellis island, not everyones cup of tea, but I found it really interesting. I'd also reccomend a circle line boat tour, or even just take the staten island, as its free, amazing views of the city.

Loved the guggenheim museam, saw an amazing exhibit when I was there in the summer by an archetict called Zaha Hadid, not sure if its still running.
Also love central park for a stroll, was lovely to explore in summer or winter.

Again, not too sure if this will still be open, but the outdoor square area at rocaffeller centre is transformed into an ice-rink in winter, very picturesque, even if it is closed, it changes into a cafe/restaurant area in summer, so still nice for a coffee.

didnt socialise too much in manhattan, as usually stay with realitives in bronx/yonkers area, had gud craic in the irish bars up there, but regret not seeing enough of the manhattan nitelife.

    Enjoy your trip!

<deep breath>Forgot to mention the Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Natural History. The second is absolutely epic in size and you could literally spend a week there.

Am not sure what to make of the Manhattan nightlife to be honest. It is not like Dublin or any other town here where you can turn around at midnight and decide to go to the club across the road. From what I can see, all the most popular places (and most like clubs here in my experience) are very pretenscious and you seem to need to be on a guest list to get in. Either that or buy a table for the night (basically pay 3/400 dollars for a bottle of wine to skip the queues and get table service the whole night).

The only club like this that I was in was a club Show somewhere on 41st street. An ex of mine was living in New York at the time and was able to sign us up to a guest list via this site http://www.velvetlist.com/Show.php3. It was actually a really good night to be honest.

There are a handful of other clubs on that. An example of how they work things over there is that 4 or 5 fellas on their own will not get in. However, 6 fellas and 3 girls could walk up and get in no problem. Noticed that quite a lot actually.

Most recently, we seemed to end up in 1 of 2 places. Both of them were across the road from each other and were on Avenue B between 3rd and 4th. One place is called China 1 and it was pretty alright. The place across the road is alled Le Souke or something like that. The place is pretty nuts and just places the likes of Leftfield all night. Weird place indeed. Ended up in some place on the corner or Ave B and 4th one night as well. Just a bar with a live DJ mixing tracks. Cannot remember the name of the place but it was a pretty chilled out place and we all seemed to enjoy it.

One final tip. Find out about bars doing happy hour. Seems to be very popular. Planet Hollywoord on Time Square was doing 2 for 1 every night between 7pm and 11p while we were there.</deep breath>

Get a bigapplegreeter. They are volunteers who show visitors around the city for free. Your agenda or their choice. Check out my review of a day with a greeter in November. It is on tripadvisor.com.

They can be contacted at bigapplegreeter.org

I'm going over there on Thursday for a week, and this thread has some great suggestions. I just want to know is there any type of a ghost tour or something like the Ghost Bus in Dublin?

everywhere around times sq will be open... dont expect manhattan to be too busy at 5am though! the bars generally shut up about then but you could find an arcade or something to kill some time!
