3 of us looking to goto New York 15th March - 25th March (10 nights).

Aer Lingus flights - 740eur each (direct Dublin/JFK ... stopovers are awful generally)
Wolcott Budget Hotel - 500eur each

We're looking for something central. We're also looking for something relatively inexpensive.

Anyone do better than those prices?

    Thanks!

Aer Lingus have a sale on now and flights to NY until March 31 are as little as €105 if u book them before February.

Wow! that's some serious difference in flight prices - I presume it's down to being the St Patricks day festivities.

My flights, non-stop Dub-JFK worked out at €357each - 1st week of February. That's less than half the price

When I said "each" for the flight prices I ment return.

Are you telling me paid 357eur return each?

I'm flying those exact dates to Boston for €400 return (via London)

via London? Who are you going with? They do NY aswell?

I know you mentioned a dislike for stopovers, but Delta are charging € 619.68 for those dates with a stopover on the DUB->JFK leg in Shannon. The return leg appears to be direct to DUB.

    Best place to book flights?

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 35,919 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

I got them from lastminute.com in the end. Was planning on booking from Go voyages but the tickets sold out in the time it took me to get holidays approved (would have been about thirty euro cheaper and a shorter flight). Actual flights are BA. Both prices showed up via the portal site easyvols.
Just checked it there for return flights from Dublin to NY on those dates and there are several in the 400-450 euro range, via London.
There's also a direct Air Lingus flight to Newark for €406, coming back with KLM. Lots to be found really.

I'm looking on Expedia.co.uk now and see indirect flights via Amsterdam or Paris for 450eur.

Does anyone have any experience with indirect flights? I went to New York last August and only stopped at Shannon with Aer Lingus .. is it similiar if I went with Air France or something? Or is it a case of getting onto a completely different aircraft?

If the first flights delayed am I screwed? Will the airline hold the plane? Or?

Any advice welcomed... there's 300eur in the difference so we're really considering indirect flights now.

And Amsterdam? I may as well go via Asia... ? :S

I just got back from the Red Roof Inn in Manhattan, right beside the Empire State and Herald Sqaure. It was 120e per night for a 4 person room (2 double beds). But there was only two of us staying in it.
Very good value, breakfast is included and very central.

Well sorry, it was $120, which was $60 each. But you could have put 4 people into the room so $30 each, which when converted into euro, etc etc.

It's gotta be separate beds .. had enough of the "European way" when interrailing :D
Will take a look at it though :)

did you have a look at www.farecompare.com? usually you'll find some cheap prices if they haven't been snapped up.

We've decided to go indirect as it seems to be the cheapest. Looking on expedia.co.uk there's flights via Amsterdam / Paris / London all for roughly the same price.

    Couple of concerns
    - London - British Airways - they're talking about strike action on Sky News .. is this likely to effect anything?
    - Amsterdam - is this not a ridicolous distance to travel in the wrong direction?
    - Paris - Air France - are the in flight movies gonna be in French or English? And is it not a bit far aswell?

Anything else we should consider? I assume if flights wait for you if the first one is delayed etc?

Well does price or travel time mean more to you? If it's a large price difference, I'd take the detour.

The flights will wait for you if they're part of the same grouping. Ie BA and Aer Lingus, Aer Lingus, American Airlines, etc. If you're booking through someone like Air France, should be no problem.

I guess my concerns are, does buying them together on Expedia make them a "grouping" ?

And any thoughts on the other bits?

    Thanks

Have you checked the actual website of the airline to see if it's the same price? Cos if it is, go with that.

    Expedia tell me this ..
    Dear Mr Doe

Thank you for contacting Expedia.co.uk regarding connecting flights.

I can advise that we cannot advise on different airlines being paired. We would require the flights to be purchased before we can advise on the policy. We can only contact the airline if a problem does arise or if the flights are booked and you have the same query. I am sorry at the moment we cannot advise on this but the booking is not complete and therfore no policy in place for missed flights. Typically most airlines do put you on the next flight if one connecting flight is delayed. I hope this information helps.

    Thank you for using Expedia.co.uk

    Yours sincerely

    Alan
    Expedia.co.uk

I'm looking on Air France and it looks alright ... but trying to look around completely.

    Sorry Ciaran, missed this post!

Yup, I got the flights for 4 adults non-stop return for €357 each all in.

I'm guessing it is because of the dates I'm flying versus your 'Premium' Paddys week flights

I booked in December online, flying start of Feb.

Got some flights off Air France today for 435eur return each. Not too bad.

SHame it's via Paris but we'll live with it :D

Got this booked a couple of months ago. Accommodation is in an apartment around 54th and 3rd I think, and is nice and cheap. I would still have preferred to stay in a hotel, but I just went along with the plans as it was less effort.

Dublin Mon 12 Mar 2007 Stopover in shannon
    NYC Mon 19 Mar 2007
    Total €468.96
    Accommodation:
    http://www.colbyinternational.com/index17785.html
$350 per night, for seven nights. Works out at €274 each.
    Total is €742 pp.

I've already flown with Air France from Dublin via Paris to NY and it was effortless really but it all depends on the stopover time at CDG I suppose.

I'm also travelling with them on March 23 (Paris/Boston -> New York/Paris) for pretty much the same price that you found.
The movies are usually in both French and English.

Looking at the website you get your own private screen with a choice of 12 movies Ponster .. .some English, some french, some other. Is this correct?

And having not been on a 2 part flight before ... Are you trapped in the deparatures lounge if there's delays etc ?

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 10,912 Mod ✭✭✭✭Ponster

It really depends on the type of aircraft you get as to if you get a private screen or not. Last September I got a private screen and the only movies that weren't available in English were the French ones.

And yes, if there are delays you won't be able to leave the departure lounge...
