This may be a stupid question, so please excuse my ignorance if it is. Is it possible to use the pill to stop your period in the middle of your cycle?

No the pill won't stop your period while your mid period, but if u continuously take 42 pills, you will skip a period, but it won't stop your... 'flow' so to speak!

I heard that they're a bugger to swallow.

Technically yes, certainly in the case of dysfunctional bleeding, a mainly progesterone (or norethisterone) pill will stop bleeding 'mid-period'. I've had to use it many times.

I wouldn't recommend messing about with things unless it's medically necessary.

It's not uncommon for women on the pill to run two packs together to avoid having a period on a particularly important time (doing so on her wedding day for example). It's not even unheard of for women to switch from the mini-pill to the combined pill just so they can do that.

It's very much not something to do very often though, the gap in the pill course is there for a reason. Talk to your doctor first.

I'm not exactly sure what you're asking. It could be three things
    (a) can you stop a bleed (either menses or pill withdrawal) once it has already started?
    (b) can you start to take the pill in the middle of your monthly cycle and therefore prevent a period that month?
    or
    (c) can you start one pack straight after another and avoid a period in the middle?

    (a) no, or at least not in a controllable way in most cases.
    (b) yes, at least partially, there may be spotting or a light bleeding but it's not advisable. It is also not possible to use it as a contraceptive method in this period
    (c) yes but as with all medications check with your doc first.

I would see my GP before I would start fooling around with this...

    or.

That's what I take your question to mean also. Liky hunnymonster said, yes it is possible although there may be some breakthrough bleeding.

To make sure your pill works properly you are meant to start to take it on the first day of your period. If you mes around at this then you are not guaranteed (as much as you ever are) to be covered and may well become pregnant.
Once you've started taking your pill and if you decide for whatever reason that you don't want to have a period run two packs together (this is called bi-cycling) i.e. you don't take the usual 7 day break for your "period".
Once your period starts be it on the pill or not you can't stop it you just have to put up with it. Its only for a few days anyway so it shouldn't be a big deal.

It is easy to stop a period once it has started. Unless it is medically necessary it should not be done, but it can be stopped in a few hours using the right prescribed medication.

Really? What is the medication? I've never heard of this. I also have to wonder what use is it really going to be to stop it for a few hours when it is hardly a torrential affair anyway?

Well for some people it is a torrential affair. Not stop it 'for' a few hours, in a few hours.
I will PM you the name of the medication as I don't think it's appropriate to name it on a public board.
