having wasted any chance i had of scraping together enough money for a wii, am a student, i decided to dig out the GC and started playing resident evil 4 (forgot how stunning the game is) and then started thinking what games did i miss out on playing on the GC....

    I have

    Resi Evil 4
    F-zero gx
    Metroid Prime 1 & 2
    Super monkey balls
    Super Smash Bros
    Warioware
    Legend of zelda

Was just wondering what games would you reccommend i look to pick up cheaply to keep me occupied when i'm not studying? is there any classics or underrated games i missed?

Sent this to Headshot a while ago when asked the same question:
    Here's my definitive list:

    Metroid Prime 1+2
    Super Mario Sunshine
    Skies of Arcadia
    Pikmin 1+2
Resident Evil remake, zero and of course 4
Ikaruga (good luck finding a copy)
    Tales of Symphonia
Viewtiful Joe 1+2 (you'll either love it or hate it)
    Zelda: Wind Waker
    Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door
    Zelda: Four Swords
    Fire Emblem
    Chibi Robo
    Super Smash Bros.
    F-zero GX
    Mario Kart Double Dash

    Multi Format:
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
    Beyond Good and Evil
Megaman anniversary Collection (best on GC)

They are what I would consider essentials.

Eternal Darkness gets a lot of praise but I don't see what the fuss is all about.
Battalion Wars is also surprisingly good.
If you want 4 player madness then Warioware is great.
I loved Baten Kaitos and Baten Kaitos Origins is supposed to be just aas good. However it won't appeal to anything other than hardcore RPG fans who don't mind a bad story if the battle system is good.

Don't think I missed much. Remember to get Freeloader so you can get the games from America much cheaper.

Agree with Retros list above (bar Metroid, but that's just me) but would highly recommend Skies of Arcadia, Tales of Symphonia and Paper Mario out of the list. Skies was pretty rare and hard to get hold of for a long time but they have it for cheap enough on play.com now:D

Eternal Darkness has to be up there too. One of the most underrated games ever I think.

Edit: and star wars rogue leader

slightly expanded version. It has a bounty hunter quest and a few more characters to add to your ship.

Must stress the brilliance of Paper Mario, a truly unique game.
And can't forget Viewtiful Joe, the little engine that could... mess with time.
I also can't recommend Harvest Moon, because theres a huge chance youll hate it. But if you ever wanted to farm in computerised form...
And if ye dont have Beyond Good and Evil anywhere else, it is certainly a must have.

Was Baten Kaitos Origins released on GC, or is it an upcoming title? I really enjoyed Baten Kaitos, though the story was a tad dodgy alright.

    Same here abelard.

Never saw it on any release schedules... was it even released here at all?

Recently got Ikaruga and tbh it doesnt live up to the hype. Its just not that good.

    i have killer 7 on the ps2

yes Baten Kaitos Origins is available to buy for the gamecube now

Well if you've played the original on the DC then there's probably not much point. You could always pick up Ikaruga on the DC. It is readily for the GC on ebay but you'll probably pay a bit for it.

It is. I have it. Found it difficult too find at the time.

Had to buy it as part of a bundle

You really need to get Metroid Prime 1 + 2. Probably the 2 best reasons to have a GC.

As for the Ikaruga haters, you just aren't giving it enough time. It's awfully difficult the first time you play but as you get good at it the perfect designof the game shines through and you start enjoying it a lot more. Not the best shmup ever made but it would be in my top ten.

If you want alternatives to Ikaruga they are hard to find outside japan. Gradius V on the PS2 is the best you can get over here. It's made by the same team that made Ikaruga. It's a far better game than Ikaruga and by far the best game on the PS2 imho.

Baten Kaitos Origins is out in the US. It's not over here yet and I very much doubt it will make it.

It's very good, a bit easy but a great game and an excellent 'port'.

The Timesplitter's games are fun and good pick-up-and-play games.

what is twin snakes? is it just a port of the metal gear solid game? any decent extras?

have played all the timesplitters games already, very enjoyable.

is there any decent rpgs apart from zelda on the system, something akin ro final fantasy or kingdom hearts?

Not many but the ones it does have are good.

I enjoyed Baten Kaitos but it's more gameplay orientated, the story sucks. It also takes a while to really get going.

Tales of Symphonia is one of the best RPGs ever made. It starts off with a story that seems very dull but picks up later on. The Battle system is a joy to play, more like streets of rage than traditional FF game.

Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door is fantastic. Great gameplay and even though it doesn't have a great story it makes up for it with humour.

And then there is Fire Emblem. Strategy RPG at it's finest. Great battle system thats a lot like Advance Wars and an excellent realistic story that rivals Suikoden 2.

PS. Zelda isn't an RPG. It's more action adventure akin to Super Metroid, Metroid Prime, Castlevania Symphony of the Night, etc.

It's just MGS1 with better graphics and a first-person mode that makes the game ridiculously easy... and a few other tiny changes too (eg. the 'porno' mag changes to one with pictures of Alexandra Roivas from Eternal Darkness  )

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,698 ✭✭✭✭BlitzKrieg

its not just mgs1, they redid all the cutscenes, which are now god awful crap compared to the original MGS...

thanks for the info retro, i think i'll look into them two, dont think i'd enjoy baitos kaitos, thanks again.

    in what way blitzkrieg?

another question.....gamestop, virgin, hmv i know these dont stock gamecube games anymore.

    does game still stock them?

where would be the best place to go looking apart from online?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,698 ✭✭✭✭BlitzKrieg

    in what way blitzkrieg?

They're done by a different director, and its all excessive over the top matrix like stunts...i'm talking slow motion fighting, bullet time and a host of other crap, which takes away from the actual stealth and tension of the game.

you could probably see an example if you youtube twin snakes.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pC1Ew2j_44

    case in point!

the cutscenes put me off playing the game (story being a major part of MGS.)

I know gamestop on henry street have a small selection of 2nd hand gamecube games.

This is true... i just took the new cutscenes as humour, love it when
Ninja cuts out the f*cking ceiling and kicks it at you
    . Awesome.

The only one that hasn't been mentioned here that I can suggest is Red Card. It's a football game but it's great - you get to do loads of dirty tackles!

    Mario Kart is great

Game on Dawson St does be good for certain GC games but Game Stop in Santry is a little gem for getting them.
Anyway I just wantted to know Aparently GC does multiplayer via broadband and I was wondering if you could do the same with the Wii and game cube games? Do players need a coy of the game each or whats the story?

...and im pretty sure one of the Viewtiful Joe's is for sale in GameStop on Henry Street.

Those MGS: TTS cutscenes are a disgrace. The worst is when the lynx helicopter fires the missile and snake jumps on and off the missile while firing a perfectly placed stinger missle.

I can't stress how much you need the metroid prime games. Just look at the reviews on gamerankings.com

Don't listen to Vyse. He is obviously delusional or had too much of something to smoke.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,272 ✭✭✭✭Atomic Pineapple

how much are you looking for rogue squadron Rhyme?

yeh all the local shops...drogheda,navan,dundalk have no gamecube games so am visiting dublin tomorrow.

yeh i seen the mgs cutscenes on youtube, that scene is a bit of a disgrace, can you play it in its original form by any chance?

i played the first metroid game.
actually didt play the second one is it worth pickin up is it very similiar to the first?

Metroid Prime 2 is really more of the same but MP1 is just that little bit better (still more of the same of one of the greatest games ever made is no bad thing).

You can't change those cutscenes in TTS. Best to get out your old PS1 copy and play the classic the way it should be played.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,123 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

I honestly thought that MGS:TTS was a really really good game, despite a bit of sillyness during some of the cut scenes, but really, I think most of that was done a bit tongue-in-cheek.

*note to self, get MGS:TTS back of my brother...

I have Viewtiful Joe, and I'll admit, i played it on the easy difficulty level, and still couldn't finish it!!! Still love the game though, and replayed it a number of times up to the same point that I could never pass!

Resident Evil remake is spectacular. Never played the original for that long, but the remake is probably the best survival horror out there.

    Resident Evil 4
    Viewtiful Joe
    Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
    Metroid Prime
    Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
    F-Zero GX
    Mario Kart: Double Dash!!

^ Games I have that I'll not part with on your list :p I don't have any of the others. I think you'll find it hard to find copies of these games. They are all incredible.

MP2 might be an exception as it is stupidly frustrating at times.

I'd add 1080: Avalanche to the list. Its excellent.

Although games are hard to come by, you can still get memory cards in GAME as far as i know.

I'm still lookin for a few of them myself, but i'm afraid i can't part with the ones i do have.

If i spot anything good, i'll be sure to post it.

Nobody's mentioned Lego StarWars I and II. I know they were cross-platform but I bought them on the cube so I could keep playing them years from now on my Wii.

Lego StarWars has something that a lot of games in todays achievement/challenge heavy games often lack: its FUN! I was laughing my ass off at the cutscenes, particularly the "Luke, I am your father" one. =)
