Silly money for booze

I was over in Andorra for the new year and I was shocked at how bloody cheap the alcohol is over there. I knew it was a duty free country, but the prices in the supermarkets there were unreal.

Bottles of asinthe were going for about €3.50

I got a bottle of Stolichnaya for €8.35

Pernod and the like were all about €2 or €3

A five litre (massive I know) bottle of JD was on sale at €50, but thats typical JD inflated pricing

My question is, do Irish taxes really inflate prices as much as they are in shops in the moment or are retailers and distriuters just taking the piss?

I used to think that it was just a big scam and the retailers were making a fortune off us but have you ever noticed how much the cost price crates of Guinness or Heineken cost around Christmas in the Supermarkets?
Probably only a few euro cheaper.

Someones definitely making huge profits but I don't think its the off licences or supermarkets.

If you didnt pay duty and other taxes in Ireland a shop could sell a bottle of Smirnoff with a decent margin for €8.50ish!

yeah andorra is a duty free state.

you'll also notice the other whiskeys jameson etc were also over 50 euro for the 5litre bottles. did you feel extra ripped off considering how cheap the drink was over there when you walked into a bar and were stil forced to pay 3-4 euro for a drink of whiskey?

I pretty much acceptedi'd be paying a fair it in bars because it was skiing season and what not, but at the same time, when you go to a bar there and order a vodka or a whiskey or most other spirits, there's no measures, but they give about the equivelant of a triple or quadruple, which is a dangerous amount in one glass:D almost no room for a mixer
