Anyone else getting strange spam like texts from Nigerian numbers? Or calls?

It's striking me as a very expensive habit to have tbh...

Not personally. You must have a number that resembles a Nigerian person's number, maybe.

Are they claiming to be heirs to the throne of Africa and want to give you bazillions of euros to help them complete a simple financial transaction?

Got an email one of those yesterday. Not that unusual except they'd made a mistake. According to the message, someone I never heard of died and left me 13.5 dollars.

Yup, in many developing countries land line systems have been largely bypassed and many people's first phone have been mobiles.

It's another scam I'm afraid! They just need to you send them a text back. That's all, plain and simple. What they don't tell you is it's a premium rate text service! Beware!

Just delete them and complain to your service provider if it keeps up.

Tell them to call you immediately (at the local Garda station number). :)

Yep, lots of developing countries now have all wireless local loops, because every time the telcos laid copper it got dug up and sold!

In Somalia, it was the mobile phone companies that pushed for the Islamic Courts - fed up with shakes downs from militias.

Was a labour, became a pain and now a serious threat. Thats effectively what has happened with spam in the past year.

I have two email addresses. My own one is an eircom one and I payed them a small fee to protect it from spam. No real difference. It stops some but far from all.

In work we have an account with spamseal.com
This works perfectly on my work email address but they cant or wont filter my eircom account. They will only filter private domains. The work domain is irishmedical.com and they stopped literally all spam on that. Does anyone know of a similar service (which works as well) for the likes of eircom, hotmail, yahoo etc?

    lol, gotta love noobs!!!:D

Firstly, the OP is talking about texts! Besides that, there are loads of ways to protect yourself from spam for free. Get a proper email account like gmail and also stop signing up for loads of crap on the internet:)

Of course your question would be better off in BB forum.....

Why are some poeple more susceptible to spam than others? I have never received spam emails, despite using email about 6/7 days in the week. Do you have to give your address to some disreputable company to receive them? I must say I feel a bit excluded. Nobody has ever offered me a princely inheritance.
    It's making me paranoid.
If I am receiving no spam then - maybe - I am the spammer:eek:

OK, I'm €1,000 short of the sum needed to assemble a crack team of hunters and trackers to find the leprechaun that stole my lucky charms. If you give me this €1,000, and the team is successful in reclaiming what is rightfully mine, I'll give you a magical coin that returns to the purse each time it is paid out.

    There you go. Happy?

why should they care, they take a bigger cut than the scammers

fastedmund get spambayes to block local spam or setup several email addresses, a private one and a public one for signing up to stuff that you don't mind being spammed out of it.
