Best package for authoring / publishing 64 page booklet

I am writing a 64 page booklet and before I start adding in text, graphics, formats, etc I wanted to pick the correct package.

The booklet will be A5 in size and will be professionally printed.

I am looking at something that will allow me create a PDF that has the pages in scroll-down order, but also a format that I can send to a printshop and that they can use to print from (including back and front pagination, and in the right order for printing, etc).

I know there is probably a template in Word, but was looking for something a bit more relevant to the project. I have used Powerpoint for a similar e-book before, and this was ideal for layout, template, etc, when converted to PDF but I think it will be problematic in this instance for printing from.

Anyone got any ideas / suggestions?

Adobe Pagemaker perhaps, I'm sure you can get a trial version and give it a go to see if it fits your needs.

Ideally QuarkXpress or InDesign, these are the packages the pros use, but they are very expensive packages to buy especially for a one off job and the learning curve to use them is fairly steep. I image most print shops could output a PDF but you need to be careful with things like image resolution.

You could try Microsoft Publisher which comes with templates for the most common document types and I think can handle imposition (putting pages in the correct order for printing). It can also output to postscript or PDF, which most printshops can handle. You would need to check with your printer first if they can handle it.
