The new iPhone sounds fantastic. I'm in the market for a new phone. I'm glad I held off getting one. Apple Online store showing the "Updating Store" page. I hope iPhone is available today!

Hasn't mentioned battery or price yet...

Also, hope the fact that it's associated with Cingular doesn't mean it won't be available over here for ages!

Can they call it the iPhone, I thought Linksys had the copyright on that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,592 ✭✭✭✭Dont be at yourself

Rumour is they're sharing the trademark.

No mention of Leopard at all in the Keynote, which was a bit disappointing. (But more than made up for by the iPhone and appletv!)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,216 ✭✭✭✭monkeyfudge

oooh... it's got it's own tab on the apple website.

  • Moderators, Education Moderators Posts: 2,432 Mod ✭✭✭✭Peteee

    appletv!

Yeah, just saw the deal on the copyright sharing thing.

About the appletv...meh, Microsoft has been doing it for the past year

Yep... not too impressed with AppleTV. I'll be sticking with my DVD player that I can stream DIVX to and have it upsampled to HD quality.

very dissappointed there is nothing i can actually buy after this macworld - was looking forward to getting a new ipod/phone which ever came first.

    also no leopard...

whens the next time for mac announcements? macworld uk or whatever its called?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,985 ✭✭✭big_moe

they have also released a new airport extreme base station that can be sold in ireland. its has built in 802.11n, and it also ships with a disc that enables 802.11n on all core2duo macs. so they have been shipping all core2duo macs with 802.11n built in but its not enabled unless u buy the airport base for 179 (and it only supports 10/100 ethernet which is fairly ****e)...

is that all the annoucements over?

    no macbook pro 12 inch?
    no leopard?

the phone looks great, but as said by someone before, it will only truely be great after a few revisions.

the main thing i like about it is, it will eliminate the need to carry both mp3 player and phone. i do have an mp3 player phone but the quality isn't as good and you need special adapter for headphones and doesn't handle imcoming calls - when you're using your own headphones - properly.

Leopard's not due till spring, the best we were ever going to get at macworld was another demo. iPhone is nice, it'll be interesting to see how successful it is.

The most significant announcement imo was renaming the company from "Apple Computer, inc" to just "Apple, inc". It's a whole new era for Apple. Macs are really just one of the things Apple does now with music, movies, phones, consumer gadgets etc, taking on increasing importance. In fact they are proving far more profitable than their computer business.

Hopefully Apple will use them to bring more people to the mac instead of letting it suffer. Apple no longer needs the mac to survive. Years from now we may all look back on this day with dread.

i think by the time the iphone arrives here (Q4 2007) the americans will have all the bugs fixed and it will perfect when it launches over here... i hope!!

this appleTV and the new airport extreme really interest me... and i never knew my mac had built in 802.11n!!

    moe

iPhone - looks real good, but still one step away from replacing my 3G Phone / 30Gb iPod. Granted a much smaller step away than all the other devices on the market at the moment.

Apple TV - no 1080 support, no PVR support - meh.

I think (hope) they didn't annouce Leopard updates et. al. due to the iPhone being such a big thing - too many announcements dilute the impact if you get me.

yeah the battery would be my biggest worry... pod+phone, thats gonna eat away and require nightly charges surely, if you have any extensive use of the gadget at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,002 ✭✭✭bringitdown

Yes 802.11n has been shipping in the latest Macs and will be enabled with a software update.

The iPod part of "iPhone" is a nano -- flash RAM, so should have good battery life for that.
Course, the prices are... horrific for now -- one could buy a PS3 at that price...

So, I guess this means that iLife 07 will have to launch with Leopard. Hopefully the price of [apple]TV will have come down to a more affordable sub-€200 pricetag, to complement the household's still-waiting-for-Leopard's-arrival iMac.
Apple TV - no 1080 support, no PVR support - meh.
... don't you need a >50" screen to really see the difference between 720p and 1080p? And wouldn't 1080p video take DAYS to download on Irish connections?
Plus, it's not meant to be a PVR -- just a hassle-free (must stress that) way to stream content from your computers to your TV.
Besides, 640x320-ish video looks fine & dandy to me; but then again, maybe I'm just not that kind of video-phile...

*edit* WHY IS NO-ONE WRITING ABOUT THE MODBOOK??

One of the most disappointing MacWorlds for me (I've seen/read live blogs for 3 years):(

I was hoping for a least ship date on Leopard, but not to even talk about it in the Keynote?! I'm quite surprised iLife and iWork '07 were both left out in the cold aswell.

Cisco are now suing Apple over the trademark "iPhone", anyone else think that ApplePhone (to tie in with AppleTV) would have been a better choice for Apple to announce it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,790 ✭✭✭cornbb

They seem intent on monopolising the letter i.

During the keynote speech, did Steve Jobs and his audience remind anyone else of an evangelical preacher and his congregation? Kind of scary... I hope this isn't the way consumerism is going. The iPhone looks cool and all, but its just another electronic device. Granted, if it does everything as well as promised it could cause a small revolution. I won't be rushing out to buy one straight away, being suspicious of all-in-one devices. Will be interesting to see how this turns out.

Edit: I agree with the poster who said its a shame that Apple seem to be moving away from desktop computing in favour of personal electronics. I'm not a fan of the iPod for one. I'm a Mac developer and I think the platform has huge potential in terms of uptake from pissed off Windows users in the future. Even apart from the glossy surface, OSX does handle certain things a lot better now than Windows could foreseeable do in the near future. But thats for another thread!

He introduces the iPhone near the end of that clip, and the rest is on subsequent ones.

    It looks great :)

Yeah I was thinking this too. I was reading live updates of the keynote on IRC and just as Jobs came on stage someone on the chat channel joked that he was levitating above the crowd.

Consumerism is already practically a religion, just give it another few years. Apple are a great company but they are at the forefront of exactly this kind of thing. Jobs already has a legion of zealots, just check out any of the mac sites :D

Reminds me of the motor industry.... BMW, "we only make cars for the road" now make suv's.. as do porshce and now lotus are joining in.... All companys that pride themselves in making "drivers" cars now make suvs etc to get in the cash..... Weather or not it'll take away from the cars only time will tell..

    same with apple i suppose
