do you have the headphones plugged in to the sound card which should quiten the speakers or do you have them plugged in to the CD drive, which has nothing to do with the sound card / speakers ?

    which version of windows ?
    which sound card ?
all sounds or just some ?

Capt'n was asking where the headphones are plugged into.

Qn 1. Does the headphone wire connect to a headphone port on the speakers/amplifier or into one of the plugs on your computer?

If plugged directly into the computer, there are usually a few places for a sound jack.
Qn 2. Are they plugged into a jack beside the speakers?

right, i plug the headphones into the computer box where the headphone symbol is.
I can't find anywhere else to plug them in

    It is running XP pro.

    sorry im non-technical

Turn down the volume in programs accessories
or if the speakers have an on/off switch then turn them off
