Acoustic Solutions

    Hi all,
Currently doing a 1600' timber frame extension on a mass concrete cottage built in the 40's.The walls in the cottage were about a foot thick so sound transmission was never a problem but I'm a bit concerned about noise transmission in the new build.None of it is slabbed yet so now is the time to address this. Just wondering what sort of acoustic solution (if any) timber framers have used? Upstairs between our bedrooms I was thinking of stuffing the voids between the studs with ordinary insulation (having trouble sourcing acoustic insulation), filling any visible holes/channels in the studwork with caulk /foam insulation.Any pipes that are running through studs/joists I'll lock in place with expanding foam to prevents them rattling.

I was thinking of double slabbing the internal walls between the bedrooms and common areas.

Has anyone used acoustic gasket tape to isolate plasterboard from the studwork?

Anyone got any tips/ideas or suppliers? Tks.

you can now get accoustic plasterboard they are blue in colour you could double slab with them failing that you could use 15mm fire slab they are also very good

hiscan , thanks for the info about the different types of plasterboard must check them out.

    foyc,
Yep we used Timberstrand LSL I beams for the first floor with an OSB subfloor on top of that. Very solid and not a squeak to be heard. I think we will fix directly to the studs, I've seen builds in the States where the fix a self adhesive acoustic tape to the stud before they put on the slab, but I can't source it here and the US company don't ship outside the lower 48.

    Thanks.
