Apologies if this has been asked a milion times before, but is there an alternative to iTunes? ie. cheaper!!!

It has. There are many alternative software packages to iTunes, none of which are 'stores' as such - all of them are just alternative means for getting your music on your iPod. Read the FAQ. As regards cheaper places to get your music, shop around, search the net. Read the FAQ.
