    Hi folks,

I will try explain as best I can.
Have a self build mce machine with roll-up2 installed.
Am running Symantec AV & Zone Alarm.

When I come out of S3 all is fine.
But about 1-1.5 hrs into any movies/tv/recorded tv/networked movies -they all start to stutter and eventually will freeze. When they are playing the HD led is flicking as per normal.
But when they start to stutter - the HD led is going like mad and making a "searching" noises. I eventually have to put the MCE in S3 but is frozen when I bring it back out. And have to do a full re-start.

What else could be using/searching the MCE machine HD and causing this to effect what ever is playing.

I have no sched scans and have disabled ZA but it still happens.
Have also disabled Optimisation and it happens when nothing should be happening - d/l tv lists is at a diff time

    any ideas to try.

    thx

What are the temps like could it be the CPU is not being cooled properly ?

    Other related stuff;
Update the bios of the motherboard (clear the CMOS afterwards).

Ditch Symantec AV & Zonelaram use Avast, AVG or NOD32 & the default Windows firewall you are perfectly safe with those and those two infamous programs wont be cluttering things up.

Use Dtemp to verify the SMART status of your HD that it it okay or get the diag tools from the makers site to check the HD.

Try the MCE Standby Tool to fine tune the S3 settings in MCE maybe something can help fix these issues.

    Thx 8T8,

    will try those alright.

was using the Hibernator for S3 from the auusie website but may switch to this one to see if it helps.
Did a defrag over the weekend - to see if that helped -but didn't !!

I know there's something in there that feckin my movie watching !!!

    Will update as I go

    thx again.

did all above as you said and mce starts quicker now.

the temp of the two hd's is about 38deg steady - is that ok.

was watching a movie this evening and mce stalled again.
movie started to stutter and like before needed to be restarted.

I tabed over to the task manager and saw WMP was the biggest prog running !!
and then mce closed itself. Eshell.exe got an error.
I have seen this mentioned a lot - is this the mce program ??
why would this fail and does it have anyhting to do with my system hanging.

    thx

    Temps are okay.

eShell is MCE that is correct.

What decoder are you using for DVD's or videos could it be the graphics card that is the problem ?

Have you tried re-installing the display drivers or the video decoders ?

There is a program called MCE Repair which may be worth trying - use the .02 version and see if that changes anything.

I saw another repair program very recently but have lost the link will try to dig it up.

ram is this - is it enough - should I get an extra 500mb
or replace lot for a 2*512mb

    TwinMOS DDR2 PC4300 256MB *2 pieces.

will post decoder info in a min.

    GC is a Radeon X700
decoder is Nvidia pure video decoder - but not 100% sure thats it's using this - how do I check
divx player and interactual player software is also loaded.

RAM amount is okay but you may want to test it with memtest+ just in case something is wrong with the RAM leave it run for two or three hours.

    Hi,

thx folks for all the help , so here is what I did.

I updated the most recent Nvidia decoder.
    Defraged all my hard drives.
    Updated the ATI gc drivers.
Ran a Temp tool on the HD -all ok.
Changed from "hibernator" to "MST" standby tool - works a treat.

And possibly the nail in the coffin - updated my "ffdshow"
I had a few music vids that would not play and now do.
Maybe :D this was the problem -but its all fine now.

Again - thx folks - especially 8T8 - hence my reply here - hopefully some-one might get a fix from info.

    K :D
