RAM Question

When we bought the computer the spec quoted the RAM installed as a
512MB Module. It appears in System Information as a 370MB module, yet when you look at the sticker on the module it states 512MB. I thought this was strange but when you buy a 160GB hard drive you don't get the 160Gb due to formatting i think and just thought it was a manufacturer ripoff. Yesterday I purchased a 1GB memory module DDR DIMM PC3200 (same as the 512MB) and it showed up as being a full 1GB module. i.e. now i have 1.37GB of RAM. How come it isn't 1.5GB? Where do I lose memory to? Does Windows require a fixed amount of memory?

Mostly: shared video memory(RAM / main memory is used to render stuff).

    Which version of windows ?
you can run Windows 3.11 in 1MB of ram

check what it says in the BIOS / Setup - if the hardware can't see it then windows won't either.

in c:\boot.ini it is possible but highly unlikely to be a setting
BURNMEMORY / MAXsomethingOrOther that can limit windows use of RAM

it's possible to setup a ramdrive in windows, but having a stable ramdrive setup on 32 bit windows is not something I'd associate with reliable witnesses.

cpuz is a little utility that can tell you what RAM is seen in which socket
