thinking about buying it from a mate in work, his missus bought a new car and is getting rid of this. anyone know anything about ford fiesta's? any use for a 1st time buyer, and would the thermostat be costly? and to install?

Provided the failed thermostat hasn't caused damage to the head gasket (provided the thermostat being referred to is the one which controls the flow of coolant) then it is a perfect first car. A thermostat will cost 30-40 to get installed - don't bother buying going to a main dealer. The best Fiesta engine is the 1.25 Zetec, but all Fiestas are cheap reliable beginner cars. Don't pay over the odds for the car - stick up some pics and details and get an idea of its value.
