Not sure if this is still running, but Homebase had Phillips CFL's, 2 for €2.99, just before Christmas. Might be worth giving them a ring to see if they are still available....

Cheap, I'm not too sure but Lowe Leds do 3watt LED GU10 replacements for €9 a piece. Supposedly the equivalent of a 35watt Halogen bulb.

These are actually on offer from Lowe's at €5.99 at the moment. I'm going to order a few myself - I'll follow up with a post when I get them to give my opinion of the bulbs.

Hmmm ... just noticed the bulbs for €5.99 are 1 watt, not 3 watt. Can't imagine they'd be too bright.

'normal' halogens are 50w so a subsitute would have to be about 5w if the lighting is LEDs a 25/35w halogen is a desk lamp so the 3w could do it

I have a few in the hall they are 42 led wide angle and 38 led spots they work for the hall as it doesn't need bright lights but if you need bright light you would be better using Cold cathode bulbs or perhaps the new Luxeon star type GU10.

found the luxeons here

http://www.dotlight.de/shop/product_info.php/cPath/159_276/products_id/869

Thats a 5w jobbie to replace a 50w halogen for €19 each + stable power units and heats sinks . Payback 2 years I make it . The problem is they appear to output 120 lumens if you look here with higher outputs promised to the right of the specsheet so they are not really substitutes.

also GU10 leds

http://www.dotlight.de/shop/product_info.php/cPath/203_212_261/products_id/672

its not a 50w replacement though, the lumens are given as 24

at 50w and 5 hours a day, 16c a unit of ESB and one dies every 9 months at €1 replacement I make it that a single Halogen GU10 50w costs €15.80 a year to run

Then again a single GU10 Halogen throws out up to

600 lumens at 35w and

800 lumens at 50w

as you can see here if you search for GU10

800 lumens from a LED is a tall order right now . This lad here is trying to source them too so he is :D . I hear they are in short supply.

In order to substitute a 50w GU10 Halogen in lighting terms, Lumens, you may need 5 x 5w LED lamps at present so you only save half the power but at a high cost to buy them . This gap will reduce over time of course. Meanwhile compact flourescent GU10s may be best, for now as they last 3 years and run at about 10-12w to get 50w subsitution , see these ones here

http://www.ebulbshop.com/acatalog/GU10.html

They cost about €15 each but last 3 years ish and have a running cost of €15 / 3 = €5 a year for bulbs and 1/4 the ESB which is €3.65 so a flourescent GU10 would cost €8.65 a year to run with the same lighting output (ish). LEDs should improve their luumen output in 3 years when they decide to start dying on me .

Thoughts people. !

Let me know how you get on as I am in the market for LED lamps. Let us also know if these are wide angle or spots. I bought LED lamp from www.tlc-direct.co.uk @ 1.8Watt and the light from it was impress for the wattage. I am thinking that 3W will make a big difference. Only problem is they are not dimmable.

The compact flourescents in GU10 form are dimmable but the LED is not . soz about that gonk I was using them for comparative technical purposes.

BLT ship here but are not the cheapest source, here is a 50w GU10 equivalent that is dimmable

Just a note: for anyone trying to replace downlighters, I have tried all the LED variants of the GU10 (mains) and MR16 (low voltage) and I can honestly say that the very best one out there was branded Brilux and even with a 5 watt LED the light output was at best comparable to a 18-20watt downlighter.

So just be careful before you buy. The LED technology, in lighting terms, is very new and is improving every few months. But if you want to swap over now, and not walk around in the dark then I suggest staying with CFL technology. There are very good GU10 CFL models done by Megaman and others; the 9watt version gives appx 35-40watts equivalent, and the 11watt version gives appx 40-45watts. That's still very good energy savings over the 30 and 50 watt downlighters.

I have done the energy saving calculations with these new lights, if anyone is interested.

Found this guy on E-Bay selling the GU10 CFL bulbs. Seems resonable, but haven't used them yet. And they'll post to Ireland

Very informative post indeed- thank you to all that contributed.

I may have missed it but has anyone sourced Cold cathodes please?

Here is my experience thus far, for what it is worth:
[all prices in euro, inc VAT]

I have tried a few options thus far and the 3 watt LEDs are just functional.

I tried the LITRON brand: cost 20.09 in Main street in Swords on 15/01/07

The 2700k 9 watt CFL GU10 by PlusLite cost me 10.64 in Swords on 15/01/07

The 3000k 9 watt CFL by Megaman cost me 21.69 in North Park in Finglas on 16/01/07.
I called them and was told 12 euro each/her self was on the way back from Blanch so she called in.....
The most irritating point was that one of them did not work!

The megaman is , imo, a nicer looking cfl than the Pluslite one but not worth twice the price.

I have 4 of them in the landing ceiling over the stairs and the light is good down in the hall

I paid 7.73 for the GU10 holders to replace the low voltage halos

Finally I paid 12 for a 12m Philips 12w soft-tone CFL.

[Thus far I have dropped 200 on a bit of R&D!!]

I have 700 watts of halos in the kitchen to replace - already GU10s but the 9 watt CFL is not 'getting past go' so need something better- hence the interest in cold cathodes.

Again, thanks for all the useful info and links

I found the same when it came to kitchen lighting. I use 2x 50 watt halogens to light 'strategic' worktop areas and 3x 11 watt CFLs to light the rest of the kitchen. I find the combination of the two gives a softer more pleasant lighting tone than CFL alone which reminded me of harsh office lighting.
