Question: Folding & showing

Sorry lads this is prob a stupid question.

It came down to the river card and there was 5 hearts on the table (9 high). There was a 4 and a 5 of hearts, were I had 4 & 5 of clubs. I was second to react after a decent raise, I folded obviously. 3 people left.

I threw my cards faced up saying "thank God I didnt raise it after the flop". One of the lads wasnt impressed with me throwing them faced up, which I normally dont do.

My question is was I breaking any holdem rules by doing so? I know its frowned upon, but I had no hearts and never raised throughout, it didnt effect the game showing those cards one bit.

    thanks
    Trilla

I'd never show my cards voluntarily, it's just information that the players didn't pay for.

By the sounds of things above you were fine. Once there was no players still to act behind you when you showed your cards.

so in other words, if there is anyone else left in the hand after me and I fold faced up Im breaking a rule? IS there anywhere I could get a copy of that rule on the net?

okay thanks! I thought it wasnt a rule as such, that if I paid for my cards I was entitled to do what I want with them.

I have seen in some tournaments where you can sweat out an opponent by showing them your cards to get a reaction(when contemplating on whether to fold/call off a raise). I have seen proffesionals pulled up over it in other tournaments on tv too...

This is very bad sportsmanship and not something you should ever do. Usually if you see ssomething one of the big names do that strikes you as unconventional and controversial then it probably is not allowed in most places. If you were to do this in an Irish cardroom, knowing that there was still action to take place behind you, you would get a warning not to do that again on purpose or else you may be given a penalty.

This all all aprt of the etiquette of the game and even though it may not be an official rule in most places (where written rules are a rarity) it should not be done. Etiquette is something that the 'TV Stars' are responsible for a downturn in and Tony G / Jamie Gold type antics are not a good development imo.

this isn't aloud in tournamnets either! I think it is aloud in cash games to get a read on your opponent, but not in tourney's!

I only did it as my hand had no effect on either player when I folded. I was just annoyed that I hadnt raised it earlier, heat of the moment thing. I wouldnt have done it if it would have altered the dicision of any of the remaining players.

    thanks all

As poker has no governing body and therefor no official rules, what you did was not "against the rules" however it would certainly be considered bad etiquette. It is by no means as serious as exposing your cards when you do not intend to fold, although according to rule 36 of the Tournament Direcors Rules your hand can't be killed for this either.
