Was there for five months last year. Too lazy to go into detail just now, but you can drop me a PM with any questions, or post them here.
I had a blog at the time, if that's of any interest to you.

You have to go to Bolivia, whatever else you do :)

I'm going to be travelling there at the same time. Might bump into each other.

Where di you book your flights? I've tried a load of sites can't get anything half way reasonable!

I went with Air Madrid, if that's any help. Bought a one-way to Costa Rica from Madrid and then another one way back from Buenos Aires when the money ran out. About 350 euro each way, but then you have to get to Madrid (it was kind of on my way).

Ehm, just checked their website and it seems they've been closed down after a failed safety inspection, so this is fairly useless info I'm afraid. :(

just checked ebookers.ie and got return flights from Ireland to Costa Rica via Newark with Continental for 880.

I am going in March for 3 months - but it is part of my round the world trip.

Martinair.nl will get you a return flight from Amsterdam to San Jose for 500 plus tax if you can navigate through their awful website. It's not far off 800 inc tax though. Mexico return is about the 600 mark w/tax with the same company.
Cheapest options are through the Antilles - Aruba, Curaçao, T&T I reckon.

keep an eye on Air France for excellent offers, flew from Dublin to Rio and back from Buenos Aires last autumn for just over €600.

Out of the places i went, definitely recommend Iguazu Falls, Rio, Buenos Aires (both amazing cities and very different). my favourite place though was Uruguay, if you just wanna chill out, meet the coolest/friendliest people and have great food/drink for half nothing, cant beat it! Was the surprise of our trip as it was originally planned as a stopover between Iguazu and BA.

so the best way to get back to ireland would be to fly from Costa Rica or brazil - i presume fly via Spain would be the cheapest or maybe via the States would be cheap also -
im going to ring trailfinders after and see what they have for coming home

I have heard that the luggage allowance is higher coming from South America to Europe than say Asia to Europe. I dont know what airlines this was with though

I booked tickets thru trail finders into Mexico (leaving March 19th) and out of Buenos Aires for just under a grand with B.A....probably a rip off but i was to lazy to search out better deals and I required a flexible return date...
