    Hi,
I'm looking for any advice from people with previous experience.

What would be the best FTP Client Server Software to use?

My OS is Windows XP Pro.

Free or pay will do, so long as it's relatively easy to setup & is user friendly.

    Thanks in advance :)

Oops! I should have mentioned Aidan, I'm using Windows XP Pro.

Thanks for the reply anyway :)

I use Novell NetDrive on Windows XP; it maps an FTP site as a drive, so you can just mount the FTP server and then access the files through explorer (or even from the command line if you need to), much easier than a separate FTP client, more like a network share. It's a free app from Novell, but they no longer support it and no longer make it available for download from their own site, and it can be difficult to locate a source:

    netdrive.exe

How to set it up: Engadget - HOW-TO: Map a drive to your FTP server

    Thanks for that Info Zircoia.
The "HowTo" link is not working though!

    Anyway,
Is this option an alternative to FTP?

What I'm really looking to setup is this,
I want to be able to make certain files & folders available so they can be accessed from a remote location, using a username & password.
I would like to use a external USB HDD on my PC to store the data but need to be able to access, download & upload to & from it via the Web remotely.

Is FTP the way to go here?

    Any advice would be welcomed.

Filezilla (server and client) is very easy to use. I've used it for about 18 months now with no problems. An alternative to FTP might be VNC, which gives u remote access/control of your PC. I use UltraVNC for this. Again, easy to install and setup.

    Both are freeware in sourceforge.

Aye. When I used windows there was nothing to compare with filezilla. Top notch. The server is a smidge fiddly to set up (about 10 minutes I'd say) but once it's up, it's great.

    filezilla.sourceforge.net

Agreed. Once I went to FileZilla I never looked back. Recommended.
