When I run spybot search and destroy it always tells me I have about 40 problems - I clean them, and run it again and It still has the same problems

Virus check is clean, I have a firewall

    The ones it finds are

    Advertising.com
    Adviva
    Avenue A, Inc
    CasaleMedia
    CoreMetrics
    Double Click
    FastClick
    HitBox
    HitsLink
    MediaPlex
    TargetNet
    WebTrends live

    anything to worry about?

What is the time interval between scans? If is a long period of time then it possible your machine is just getting infected again.

If they aren't being removed at all you may want to reinstall the programme as well as downloading AVG antispyware, Adaware and Defender. The programmes can run together without causing any sort of conflict and they will increase your chances of catching any nasties. You should consider switching to Firefox and install some of the security extensions like 'NoScript' etc.

Make sure you check the items you want removed. Re start and run again. You should also run Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE free edition and compare results. Only download from Lavasoft site. Its spyware free as well.

Have you a search bar running? It may be generating the spyware.

Scan in Safe Mode perhaps or somethings Spybot will ask you if it can scan on the next reboot before anything gets a chance to load and also give AVG Anti-Spyware a go.

if you are sure your computer is 100% stable you can disable system restore (this will paint you into a corner though) and clean and then renable it

I prefer to give me full rights to the system folder so I can keep the system restore but am able to do a full scan on it too.

the command in DOS is something like -
    cacls "c:\system volume information" /e /t /g administrators:F

I find that programme almost worthless to the point of redundancy. I think the last infection it detected was nearly a year ago.

    Valor...
You never named the AV programme you have currently installed? If it's Norton AV 2007, it is incompatible with Spybot S&D per Norton Security Inspector, which may be part of the problem?
