Weekend away in Amsterdam

Hell yeah, baby! Me and two mates are thinking of going over to the dam sometime around March/April.

Just wondering

• what are good/bad places to goto?
• whats a good city (near an airport) to stay in?
• how cheap is the weed there?
• can foreigners still get it legally (heard sometime about a law coming in or something)?
• how dodgy are the hostels, or would a hotel be better?
• do hotels mind if you come in or go out at all weird hours?

The rough plan is to fly over, fly back, get cheap (but not crap) accomodation whilst there, smoke alot of weed, and see the sights.

Oh, and before anyone asks, we're all mid-20's (in case they have some law like the States where you have to be over 21 to drink).

Mods, I know talk of drugs, and where to get them is not meant to be discussed here, but this is to be centered on Amsterdam, where the stuff is legal, and I don't want to goto a hellhole and have a sh|t time.

The centre of Amsterdam is full of potheads, weirdos and American students gone wild. Not very pleasant, to be honest, and this seems to be the kind of holiday you and your mates are looking for.

Last time I was there, we decided to steer clear of those areas as much as possible. Since we had got the train in from Utrecht (which is a more typical city), we ended up having to contend with the ugly side of Amsterdam until we got out of the centre tourist trail, which is repulsive. We were staying in a well priced, but swish, place near Museumplein which is wonderfully dead at night.

Amsterdam caters for all type of tourists, but I hear the hostels are well worth steering clear of. There is one famous hotel though, famous for being so scummy, that they made its reputation central to its marketing campaign. Can't remember the name, though, but the hotel's huge.

If you want to escape the madness, wander around the Jordaan district.

Booze can be bought anywhere and it'll be easy to buy it at your ages. As for weed, no idea, I don't smoke.

Cool. I'll take the Jordaan thing into mind, as one of the lads doesn't smoke (he's your typical 6-pack fitness nut).

Good city??! The Dam is a city, Holland is the country, think you've been having too much of their good stuff already
Can't remember the prices but they are reasonable. You can buy them pre-made but that's a rip off and not the way to do it
Never heard of that law, mainly foreigners there anyway!
Don't know about the hostels, been there a few times and never used one. Remember once roughing it in the train station. don't recommend this as the security comes round and will kick you in the mid-section :mad: Hotels are fine and they don't mind people coming and going.
Oh, and watch out for trams and bikes!

Amsterdam is one brilliant city...was there about a month ago for 3 days...stayed in a room over a pub on the train station end of the RLD..great spot for a session and at €50 a night for the double room it was safe a clean....the cafe's are legendary..was just buying the prerolled, €3.50 put me on my ass!:)

If you just plan to drink and get stoned then a hostel in or close to the Red Light District would be a good idea, and you can still walk to most of the main sights from there. The Flying Pig is the most famous one but there are others, guests are usually young, stoned tourists who are in Amsterdam for a good time so ye should fit right in

There is no problem buying weed in the numerous coffeeshops and the legal age for drinking beer is 16.

Who did you fly over on, and how much did it cost? Booked a place in one of the Bulldog hotels. Steep price, but it's a good location.

Good - hill street blues, just around the corner from the grasshopper. stay away from the grasshopper unless u like a mcdonalds style cafe with over priced beer + WEED

Amsterdam and fly into schipol, book early on aerlingus and youll geta good deal, avoid charleoi

how cheap is the weed there?
varys from place to place, the most famous shops are more expensive, good quality stuff will cost about 15 euros a gram ..

can foreigners still get it legally (heard sometime about a law coming in or something)?
yes you can still buy it without being arrested, although cannabis is not 'legal' in the netherlands to anyone

how dodgy are the hostels, or would a hotel be better?
hostels are ok, but i would reccommend a place called the bridge hotel, just near rembrant square - walking distance from RLD and cheap, clean, friendly

I woul dhave to def agree here but its on of my most favorite coffee shops ,, cant wait only 3 1/2 weeks before I make my usual pilgramage there . On the note on accom try the greenhouse effect its appartments are pretty good and close to the station , if not try the bukdog appartments !!
