You're A Star

What do you all make of it so far? Honestly I think the standard of talent has dropped a lot since last year. Doesn't look like any of the qualifiers have the star quality of the finalists last year, but its early days yet so we'll see how it goes. All that being said I thought 21 Demands were really good

I absolutely hate You're A Star, I find the judges intolerable and their ability to judge "talent" exceptionally flawed (take Joe and Donna McCaul for example...Jesus they were awful). The entrants are somewhat pathetic, especially the ones that break into tears, I mean ffs. You've got to be absolutely desperate to think You're A Star is the best way to get into the music industry.

Talent wise it's on its last legs. I heard that they were really struggling at the auditions this year and that one place only had 70 people turn up. I would have said viewers wise it was also on the way out but the second (not even first) episode this year got something ridiculous like 715,000 viewers. Clearly people are still watching. As long as british shows like the X-factor or the US' american idol are runaway sucesses then Irish audiences are going to turn to their Irish equivelent. It's worth noting that the second show had Louis as a judge so that whole X-factor comparison went a bit further. Last year I was convinced this year would be the last but I'd be surprised now if it was.

Is there any point to it? No. Donna and Joe were horrific, Lucia Evans was fantastic but not properly researched (if the woman couldn't tour outside Ireland what was the point?).

It's an absolute disgrace I know it's a small country but anyone with a hint of real talent won't go near this sh1te it's embarrassing!
It was grand the first year there was a bit of a buzz about it I know Mickey Harte and he couldn't get arrested before it at least he's getting a bit of a career out of it and made a few quid - after that the whole show went completely pear shaped.
Those three idiots couldn't judge a farting contest - O' Connor is an ignorant hack, Martin is a third rate Cabaret act with bad plastic surgery and Thomas Black is a washed up ligger who never signed a decent band in his life - any major Irish signings are done through the UK offices of record companies.
What moron in RTE decided these were best qualified to find new talent in Ireland?
When you see the calibre of artists on shows like the X Factor (I know they have their crap too but at least the judges don't let the really bad ones through - those three idiots do it all the time) it makes me cringe to see the likes of this on TV as a representation of our quality of programming.
And don't get me started on Celebrity Jigs and F**ck1n Reels!

The format was never a good one anyways, IMO. It has been done a lot in Britian (and a lot better as well!!) - the only reason it keeps going is because it keeps getting money from young viewers texting in to keep their favourite.

If it wasn't for young teenage girls (especially) this show would have bitten the dust long ago. As regards the standard of talent, well its more like Eircom league than Premiership

Well whatever about the crapness of the contestents so far, there were in my opinion, a couple of decent bands on it last night.
There is something far better about the bands as in general they did not do covers. The standard contestants in these talent contests are generally cover singers and even when they win the show all their stuff is written for them.
The whole thing is a standard talent contest, Irish style and I doubt anyone who wins it will ever be competing with U2 in a few years time but none of the other reality talent contestants from anywhere have really done "that" well out of it.
There were a few bands last night though that I will be keeping an eye out for in future-so for them the show gave them some exposure they would not have gotten elsewhere.

I make a point of always tuning in for the band show as there are always a few genuine musicians turn up. I thought some of the bands on last night were excellent, esp the two that went through, that London Oirish thing and the really young guys, one of whom couldn't partake because he was too young.

Anyway, what pi$$ed me off all the way through was the constant references about them having to play covers in the knock outs. FFS, you've got genuine talent here, guys writing their own songs, and they want to make them play cover versions?? They should be embellishing the fact these guys have something original to offer, not some karaoke style sh!te.

I agree that the bands section does possess some genuine talent, why they want to take this shíte route into the music industry is beyond me. Maybe its just to get coverage, but I can't imagine having the title of "You're A Star" winner being anything to be too proud of, considering how most in the music industry view the show as an absolute farce.

The North Dublin band 21 Demands are very good, and I hope they win it (to at least get coverage and perhaps a better contract) as they've real talent and stage presence. I've yet to see any solo act in the auditions that I could call talented. Most are just trying to shape their voice around another musicians that they've seen on tv, absolutely nothing original*

*And most of the girls they've put through are ugly

Hey all, thanks for the compliments, much appreciated. we will be playing more originals as well as a few covers on the show (providing we stay in!) saving the originals till our performance time is increased later on in the show tho.
    Cheers to any1 who voted!

    Conor, 21 Demands

Hey Conor, I was well impressed with the little I seen of 21 Demands. I hope ye go far as I would like to hear more of the original stuff ye do.
Whatever about the credibility of the competition, bands such as this would find it extremely difficult to break into mainstream or get publicity were it not for competitions such as this.
