hiya guys, im running a custom build machine thats operated flawlessy for 8months now and recently it has started to at random times completely freezing, you can do anything when this happens, movies pause, network connection drops, msn logs out and games pause, the pauses last for about 5 seconds and the machine comes on and runs perfect again for maybe 5 - 20 minutes and happens again,

any ideas why this cud be happening?

A few things you can try, test your memory with memtest. If you download and install a lot of programs it might be nearly time for a fresh install. Do you have anything to monitor the temps of your CPU, etc?

yeah currently my CPU is fluxuating between 28 and 29 which id assume is fairly good, PWM IC what ever that is is showing as 41 degree's and my Chipset is showing at 48 degrees (maybe 48 is a little high but its always been about 45 degrees since i put it together).

ill have to try memory test later. Surely if it was the memory id get the bsod? or the machine wouldnt pull out of the freeze at all.

Memory problems can do a lot of things - momentary freezes are one of them. The other things you mention can happen with RAM problems but not necessarily.

Test your memory as it stands with memtest86. Then test the computer (both with Memtest and in use) with one stick of RAM at a time.

Have you installed any new hardwear of late ?
If you cant sort the problem sometimes your only option is to format. And if the problem is still there then it can be a right b*lls. Had a problem like this until a week ago when i ended up formating and the problem was still there. Then for some reasion i was thinking it was one of my harddrives, took it out and all is well again.

As I recently found out the hard way, there is no point in formatting if the problem is hardware.

One last test for the OP - the acid test perhaps.

When the system goes into a freeze, hit the CAPS LOCK key. If the keyboard does not respond, something is wrong in hardware.
