Can I cite Wikipedia as a reference in my bibliography, or will that be frowned upon?? (I only used it for specific names, dates etc).

Plus, on a completely unrelated note, are membership costs for the gym based on the academic or calendar year?

I'd never reference Wiki personally, I'd prefer to get a more reliable source (check if Wiki's referenced the bit you want and try and find that reference). If you do happen to reference Wikipedia, make sure you include the date you accessed the page on as well as the address.

For the first point - if you reference wikipedia, only reference it once. there are certain lecturers who hate it (and i understand why) but if you can manage to get the reference from elsewhere then do.

as for gym memberships, there are two at the mo (will change with the new sports centre) - 65(?) for the academic year, ending somewhere in may, and 95(?) ending 31 september 2007.

is the annual one fixed to 31sept? seems kinda useless...

as regarding referencing wiki's its highly frouned upon by all academics i know, i'd follow john's advice and see if they cite something better, generally you shouldn't be referencing nearly any webpages if possible for most bibliographies, academic journals/conference papers are the way to go(if applicable)

..thanks guys! I thing I might just leave it out to avoid any unnecessary hassle.

And as for the gym, I'll probably just wait til September 07 and get the full year out of it - that way, I can also claim to have officially failed all of my resolutions. Bring on 08 ;p

  • You can still pay as you go at the gym can't you? How much is it to get in? When are the least busy times?

€2 a session, busiest early in the morning and between 4 and 7 in the evening.

  • OK thanks. How early is early? :D (actually when does it open and close now?)

Im sure you know this but Wikipedia can be edited by anyone at anythime. This means Joe soap who actualyy doesnt know a thing about a subject can post something up there. It would be a step up from quoting something off boards tbh. Chances are it will be copped at some stage but in theory wikipedia is in no way concrete. I would never ever cite it and the majority of essays Ive had to do we have been specifically told by the lecturer not to. My advice is ask the lecturer who gave the essay. You could email in the time it took to post here. Personally I dont think this is the best place to get the question answered.

Very true regarding the ambiguity of it all - but you're safe enough if you quote from the references cited in the footnotes and credit that original source. You even get the bonus of looking like you researched a load of obscure academic journals :D

Unless, of course, such a journal doesn't exist.
