Not unless you want to take it out of the enclosure and repartition... No.
If it's not supported; it's not supported, TBh.

if memory serves correct win98 had feck all USB support, reckon se is the way to go but also had its share of problems see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/263218

It won't work, only Windows 98se (second edition), Windows 2000, Windows ME and Windows XP support USB 2(from the Lacie website). USB 1.1 devices worked on Windows 98 I think.

USB 2 is backward compatible with 1.1 , Microsoft rubbish as usual is the problem

can you not upgrade to 2000 or XP? I mean licences are pretty cheap nowadays.

it is backwards compatible, but only at usb1 speeds. that drive requires it to run at usb2 speeds.

It says on the box, only compatible with win98se and higher. It should of said on the website you bought it from ( if indeed you bought it online )

Pcworld sell winxp for about 80€

In theory of MS would say that spec would run XP but it would be ****e, I might have win98se somewhere but need to look, can you not try take files off old pc via memory stick or crossover cable (network).

It would be a headache for you to run anything but 98SE or dare I say it..Windows ME *lightning strikes*.

I agree with ruu, me is your best bet tbh. As XP will kill that machine. unless you fancy spending some monies ot upgrade it.

WIndows 2000 will run ok on that system, but SE would be best.

SE for the record will work. However 2000 will be better. You need USB2.0 support otherwise your hard drive is worthless. Simple as that. Bought a 320 external for a family member who had a machine with 4 times the spec of yours and Win98 SE (The drive wouldn't work full stop on SE by the way, needed 2000 or XP - It was a toshiba drive though, Seagate disk in it).

The trouble is that using USB1.1 is not that viable because of the slow transfer. A 700MB file moving over USB 2.0 takes less than a minute. Over the 1.1 it takes 10- 20 minutes depending on the spec of your machine, or at least those are the real world speeds I experienced anyway. In short whatever operating system works you should make it a priority to have USB 2.0 support. You can buy a PCI USB 2.0 card which will do this for about 20 quid in the bigger stores (PCWorld, Soundstore etc...) or about a tenner online.

Quigs is right even if u put xp on that machine your USB ports are still 1.1 - network your data might be best option
