    Hi

    I am new to this. I recently purchased a Philips 42PF5421 LCD Tv:D , I also have
    a pretty hi spec pc with a ATI Radeon 1300xpro grafics card I am just wondering what do i need to do to turn this into a HTPC? I have some TV shows on my PC that are in HD format will i be able to play these on my new tv?

    Thanks!

    It is fairly straight forward;

    Step1: connecting PC to TV video
    The TV you own has a resolution of 1366x768 and two HDMI inputs according to the specifications I have seen.

    The X1300 Pro should have one or two DVI inputs which can be coupled with a DVI to HDMI cable and will allow you to display the PC on the TV so that takes care of the video.

    Step2: connecting PC to TV audio
    Now HDMI actually carries video and audio but DVI only carries video so that means you will have to route the audio from the PC's sound output via RCA cables into the TV or into a dedicated sound system if you have one. You may also need this to convert the output from your sound card into RCA connections.

    Step3: putting it altogether
    With everything plugged in you may have to force a custom resolution of 1366x768 you can do this in the ATI control panel or via third party utilities to get the best picture quality as 1366x768 is a non-standard computer resolution or settle on a slightly lower resolution without having to tweak it.

    Step4: getting media centre software
    Media Portal & GB-PVR are two popular and free media centre programs that run atop Windows XP so no need to buy anything more if you don't want to. Both support directshow so you can use video codecs for whatever content you want including HD clips as long as your PC is capable of playing them.

    I strongly recommend ffdshow as the decoder for most types of content.

    Any more questions fire away.
