How would you feel about an official "Film of the Week"?

Similarly to what John has done on the Alternative / Indie board, how would the patrons of the Film board feel about doing something similar here?

I know, some people are thinking that we have a lot of stickies already, but I'm thinking of tidying up a lot of the older ones and putting all the information into a single "Film Resources" sticky.

    So, thoughts?

Seems like a good idea, theres plenty of films mentioned here that i'd like to get around to seeing and a week sems adequate enought time to lay my hands on them.

    Could work.
How would the official "Film of the Week" be chosen?

    Sounds like a fantastic idea

That sounds very good. Would it be chosen from one of the new releases each week, or would it be more like a classic film each week?

    I was also wondering.

Yes, I love what John has done over there. It's gotten me to listen to a good few new bands.
I think the way he chooses is by people voting:confused: Not sure. But that works.
    I think it's a very good idea.

Think it could work well, has my support.

I dont know, alternative/indie doesnt get as much of a diverse number of tastes as a catagory covering *all* films.

I'm guessing your gonna get more trouble with some of the winners each week, if whoever is overseeing this endevour (I assume its you Karl.) I hope your up for a bit more work.

Just look at the small amount of hostile debate that came from the little miss sunshine thread. If a film is put up as the forum's Film of the week, someone is not going to agree and be a bit hostile about the film being the definite film of the week.

Its why I wanted no debate in the defining boards movie thread, because I knew that if people were allowed to discuss their entries, someone would have got overly hostile about some film being put forward.

Seems like a great idea, I have always like the one on the alternative/indie.
I agree with what BlitzKrieg says about it covering a very wide area, but normally I can only come up with just one film of the week even if I have seen a good few films that week and like most of them.

As for the hostile debates, keep the thread to a vote type thing with no debate.

I think debate is a good thing to have, and it should be encouraged as much as possible on this board. It's easy enough to split off discussion from a suggestion thread anyway.

Anyway, I'll be taking suggestions and people should qualify why they think a particular film should be film of the week.

I would agree with you. But I'm afraid of threads like the Little Miss Sunshine one, where the debate goes as far as "That film is rubbish!!!"

I always find that when something recieves a carte blanche recommendation, in this case a 'film of the week' nod, users online tend to get more uppity over this.

But it is a good suggestion, as long as the voting is handled right and your willing to swing the ban hammer around a bit more.

And I put forward my stock film for any such award as a nomination.

    Tremors!

(on a side note, will there be something to stop people voting the same film every week? Or will that be allowed up to the point that film gets an award.)

    I support this too.

Second Tremors as the first film of the week!

If you've not noticed, the suggestion thread is up here.

    Apologies, thanks!

I think some people might be missing the point.

"Film of the week", to me, is not an award, or an indication of a good film. It is just a film put forward to be picked apart by people, praised and criticised, discussed. Right?

Well, I'm hoping the films picked will actually be good, so that eventually the FotW could be an indication of a good film, but yes, discussion, discussion, discussion is certainly one of my biggest hopes for this venture.

Karl Hungus just pointed me in the direction of this thread. Firstly, thanks for enjoying the albums of the week. Secondly, I think Karl is going with the same idea as I had over in Alt/Indie, not pick films to be representative of the forum but pick films out for discussion, like a bookclub where a book is picked, everyone goes off and reads it and comes back with their opinions to debate. I was afraid of flame wars erupting over some albums but it never happened so I think the chance of threads descending into burning, deathly flames is negligible.

Kind of. It's a mysterious system. Basically I go through the suggestions thread and see if there's an album that has:
    a) been suggested a few times by different people
    b) many albums by the same artist suggested so I pick a recent or a classic album by them
    c) something unusual that might get more people listening to it or generate interesting discussion.

As a rule I try not to pick something obscure as it reduces the amount of people able to discuss it. Right, I'm off again. (I think this is my first post in films)

Sounds good. Karl / ixoy would have the final say based on suggestions put forth by the users. (screw democracy :))

Would make for some very interesting discussion threads, there's far too many list-type threads around lately :/

would be a good idea methinks. themed weeks as well (halloween, easter, etc. etc.) would be a bit of fun.

hopefully it inspires some good debate too
