Is that when downloading an update from within iTunes?
might be worth totally uninstalling iTunes and then grabbing the latest version from apple.com

Yeah when i am in itunes it tells me that a newer version is available - i go to download this and it brings me to the apple site to download. its when i download from here that I get the error. I thought about uninstalling and starting again but I will lose playlists etc. I presume the music files themselves will be okay even though they are in an itunes folder?

The playlists, music library, album art etc will still be there after you reinstall.
They're kept in an iTunes folder within that particular user's my music folder iirc.

Is your iTunes music not backed up as part of your regular backup? :D

Mines on an external drive. ;)
