Div1 in Irish Racing

Sadly, if the truth be told, I know more about British racing than Irish.

What does Div1 mean in Irish racing?

For example, the 2.05 at Cork:

2:05 McCarthy Insurance Group Maiden Hurdle (Div I) (6yo+) Winner £5,718.62

The race had two many entries and so was divided, look out for div 2 probably the 3:05. (or a chase was abandoned and they needed a 6 race card!!)

    We meet again healio :)

Thanks a lot, never knew that. I (wrongly) assumed that a Div11 was a worse class than a Div1.

Much clearer now. I appreciate that, thanks.

How come this does not happen with British racing?

You could actually be right there, with the higher rated horses getting into Div I, and the lesser rated into Div II. Im not sure how they actually divide them.

I think it does, but not often enough to be recognised.

    .

I'm pretty sure it isn't a case of the better ones go into division one - it would be too hard to work out for maiden hurdles with a lot of unraced runenrs.

It does on occasion. This quote springs to mind (from RP):

"They divided the race so the prize-money went from derisory to insulting"
Trainer Jon Scargill, as Generator lands a division of a 7f handicap at Lingfield to net just £1,700

    :p

It happens quite a bit at English All Weather racing, especially in maidens, there'll be a Div 1 and 2.

when the advertised amount of races cannot be fullfilled like at cork they will divide races to give a full card -look in the declarations of a race and u will see more than 50 entries for each race so they can easily divide and keep the maximum numbers in both races they dont put better horses in div 1 -its all done thru the ballot system to be fair

on my desktop i have a copy of the irish rule book i downloaded it from the turf club website for free or u can purchase a copy for 20 quid from hri wheterbys etc -i find it a handy tool if i need to look anything up and im sure a lot of people on here could use it as some threads i have come across over the few months i have been posting on here tend to get argumentative over silly things that could easily be looked up in the rule book or the many publications hri and the turf club publish - if i am going to back horses seriously i like to know the rules -

every aspect of racing is covered in the rule book
