    Hi all,
Im wondering if anyones looking forward to Eurovision and especially Eurosong 2007. I really hope Dervish get a great song and bring the contest back to Ireland. Eurosong is in February and i hope we get a winning song. What do you all think of Dervish? Lets start talk of the Eurovision here. What are your favourite Irish Eurovision songs. What do you remember of Ireland hosting the Eurovision was it magical Riverdance etc. Which was your favourite song for Ireland? Fingers crossed we can do it in 2007. Also who do you think if we won should host the contest? In my opinion it should either be Blathnaid Ni Chofaigh, Sharon Ni Bheolain or Grainne Seoige. What do you all think? Also if Ireland had entered you raise me up as its entry a few years ago would it have won with the right singer? Also what do you think of Dervish???

Let the conversations of eurovison start here... I really hope people take this thread seriously because i actually am pround of Irelands Eurovision history and would like to hear peoples serious views on it. :) Thank you all and Happy New Year!

Yup, I'm mighty proud of that.

I was thinking the music forum....until I realised just how flawed that logic was.

Anyone above a certian age in Ireland will recall us winning it ad nauseum and the birth of riverdance....it all went downhill from there (well further downhill) and the nail in the coffin IMO was letting the masses decide on the winner by phone/txt poll.....very very flawed and makes the competition pointless.
I think the EV started off as a serious way to unite diverse european nations in a developing EEC.....it has graduated into a campfest of z-grade musicians, and general awfulness.
I've not heard of our entry this year, I don't care to....best of luck to them for what it's worth.

I still bare a grudge against RTÉ for not accepting the song I submitted back in 1999.

And "Tales of MonkeySex and Debauchary" was such a snappy songtitle as well. Them fcukers in RTE don't know they're born.

This year will see the Czech Republic and Georgia <(Asian WTF like) plus Serbia & Montenegro will be participating as different countries.

My money will be on either Slovakia or the Czech Republic as they are both slap bang in the middle of Eastern Europe and should gather a good share of the votes of the 12 to 14 year olds with Mobiles in that quagmire of a region.

Neighbour voting will prevail and Finland may be as far West as this trophy will come again. Strippers with whips and mad mountainy music will probably win.

The whole thing is pointless and seeing Lordi win it last year was gas as it kinda gave the thing the two fingers.

Indeed...the OP seems like a mighty happy person alright.

Anyway, (I'll admit) I was watching the Late Late a few weeks back when there was an out-of-tune band on and I said "deary me, that's the worst band I've ever heard." Turned out to be Dervish - get used to null points.

I have no idea who Dervish are. OP, you might want to get out more. ;) I was outraged when Lithuania didn't win last year so in protest, won't be watching this year.

Once upon a time I cared a smidgeon about eurovision, as it was a good excuse to have a party and take bets on which country would come last.
Two things have put me off it in the last 5-6 years.

    1. THe manner in which the irish entry is chosen has become a joke. Its either teenyboppers voting by mobile for some gormless karaoke act, or some person/persons unknown deciding behind closed doors that B.Kennedy or Dervish (?wtf?) shall represent us. Its supposed to be a song contest and this bull**** takes away from that. The songwriters should choose their own performers for their song. THey know who suits the song best.

    2. THe arrivial of our new friends in the detritus of the USSR breakup has truly thrown the poo into the bathwater. THey are terrified of starting a new war by not voting for their neighbours, and they are also so desparate for a bit of tourism and TV exposure, they band together to keep the contests in their area. They are also ****e at songwriting which makes a mockery of the contest. Mind you, on the pro side, this does make for entertaining TV!

So while I might watch the eurovision final, it will be with a jaundiced eye, and I certainly wont watch the irish version, cos I couldnt give a toss what happens there!

The Eurovision is going to be an even bigger sham this year, after that pile of crap "Lordi" and their little gimmick won last year I wouldn't be surprised if more jokers/gimmicks turn up to this one, or are put forward by their respective countries as they think their niche will take it this year. Not a chance I'll watch it this year.

Btw, I thought Brian Kennedy did quite well last year. Glad that the You're A Star winners aren't being put forward anymore. After the atrocity that was Joe and Donna McCaul, it really highlighted how f*cking bad the judges on that show are.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,061 ✭✭✭✭Terry

the judges on that show are all backslapping ****. bring back the old system for both shows. then i can get back to just watching the voting because all the songs are always crap anyway.

Seen the woman from Dervish singing on TV recently. She sounded like your typical pub drunk singing......absoultely terrible. Couldn't believe they representing us.....nil point

Ok who, or what, is a Dervish? -edit: Ah, they're a trad band.

And I'm all for Rock and Metal as opposed to the same old tripe in Eurovision but Lordi were just crap. Not that I care about any of this anyway as I don't watch Eurovision or Eurosong.

Exactly. If Eurovision wasn't already at the bottom of train-wreck TV then it would be all down hill from here.

And yet that show continues, all be it with absolutely no point these days.

I heard on the radio this morning that the BBC are asking Morrissey to write the UK entry for Eurovision this year. Not a Morrissey fan but at least he has some talent for writing decent songs. Eurovision has not been about the songs or music in a long time though so I doubt it'll make any difference.

Is anyone else with me on this? It is blatantly obvious to me that the OP is in fact Dervish (refer to references above).

And for the record, no, I hope you don't win. Whoever you may be Dervish/tvworshiper2006 ;)

    Morrissey for the UK
    Morrissey in talks for Eurovision

Former Smiths singer Morrissey could represent the UK at the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest, the BBC has confirmed.

The Mancunian musician first expressed an interest in taking part after Daz Sampson's song, Teenage Life, came fifth from last in the 2006 contest.

"I was horrified but not surprised to see the UK fail," he said. "Why didn't they ask me?"

The BBC says it is in talks with the singer to write and possibly perform a track for this year's contest in May.

But a spokeswoman for the corporation warned "nothing is confirmed at the moment".

The BBC has approached several other high-profile acts as it tries to "up the ante on the calibre of artists" taking part in the annual competition, she added.

Morrissey, 47, first found fame with indie group The Smiths, whose dark, brooding songs and social commentary on issues such as vegetarianism won a devoted following.

The band also released a series of acclaimed albums, including The Queen is Dead, which regularly feature in critics' all-time best lists.

They split up in 1987, after which Morrissey launched a successful solo career, scoring 10 top 10 singles in the UK.

He has been linked to the Eurovision song contest before, working with the UK's first winner, Sandie Shaw, in the 1980s.

Last year, the video for his You Have Killed Me single featured a pastiche of the kitsch Eurovision competitions of the 1970s.

However, to make it through to the real Eurovision, Morrissey would have to win the public's approval in the qualifying stages of the competition.

Former Blue singer Antony Costa and glamour model Jordan have seen their hopes dashed at this stage in previous years.

The winning entrant will compete against 23 other European nations in the final, which will be held in Helsinki after Finnish hard rock band Lordi won the contest in 2006.

The Register.com reports that Israel's entry for this year's competition is a p!ss take of the Iranian nuclear programme. See here.

Maybe Morrissey could hit back with "Fat Man in a Coma"?

Bit worried about enthusiasm of OP; what is he is on....E(urovision) pills?

Slight detour but have a question. Mentioned this thread to a guy friend of mine this evening. Always wondered if he was gay to be honest (never seems to score any girls, nor express an interest in them) but a few friends of mine recently convinced me that he was just choosy!

Anyhow I mention this Eurovision business and he gets incredibly excited and animated and tells me how he recently bought the 'Best of Eurovision' DVD. And that he records the contest each and every year. Is this a comment on his sadness or his sexuality?

    Thoughts?!! :)

    PS Bring back Johnny Logan.

I had never heard of Dervish until they were announced as Ireland's entry for this year's eurovision.

I couldn't believe how bad they were on the Late Late Show. I've heard and seen better performances from drunks. The way she howled through the 4 songs was appalling. She made all the songs sound similar to each other.
John Water's song was marginally "better" than the others. The group were like something out of hicksville. Absolutely dreadful.

Having said all that the eurovision is now more of a spectacle and no longer a song contest that Dervish will probably do ok at it.

They used to play in the Africa League and The Asia League in Football, and now they play in the European Cup. I imagine they didn't get very welcoming receptions in previous competitions.:)

And it's not like they could enter a Middle Eastern Song Contest either if there were to be such a thing. "Israel - nul points... " That song is a joke though.

They are in the European Broadcasters Union which entitles them to entry. There - a little bit of education for you to impress the radicals at the next march.
