Issue with TightVNC

    Hi there,

I managed to finally set up my home netwok (I'm so proud!) and I want to be able to control both PCs without having 2 monitors/mouses (mice?). Anyway, I decided to use TightVNC to do just that.

Everything is working perfectly however, in the VNC Viewer window, I cannot see the taskbar of the PC I am connecting to remotely. It's just grey like the rest of the desktop... It still works though! When I click on the bottom left of the NC Viewer window, the Start Menu does pop up!

Does anybody know how I can fix this please?

Thank you for your help! :)

By the way, both PCs have Windows XP SP2 with all the latest updates.

If the client is running at the same desktop resolution as the server and you didn't enable Full Screen mode, you may find the taskbar is just out of sight - scroll down a little or run full screen mode.

Which compression level are you using?
Have you tried changing the viewer Options... -> JPEG compression level & Display options?

Hmmm... The resolutions between the Client and Server are definitely different (1024 x 768 vs 1680 x 1050 respectively). Furthermore, I cannot scroll down (no scroll bar anywhere)...

And if it was hidden away, would the Start Menu pop up when I click at the bottom left? It does at present... It's confusing!

You dont have auto hide the task bar on that particular pc do you ?

It could if all but the top edge of taskbar pixels were out of sight but it seems your problem is the taskbar not being drawn on the client screen.

Anything unusual about the setup on the server, such as multiscreen display or addons that would affect the taskbar and start menu?

There are some client options related to when windows refresh and mouse pointer sync but nothing I know of that could cause this.

You could try RealVNC on both and see if you get the same problem with that.

Hmmm, that sure is unusual. TightVNC is good but its not perfect, could just be a bug. Anyway I know its not much of a solution but try UltraVNC instead. I know Snowbat mentioned RealVNC but you have to pay for that to get the most out of it. UltraVNC is free. (Google it for a link, I can't think of one off hand but I'm pretty sure its on souceforge)

Thanks for the advice guys! I started looking into UltraVNC and RealVNC (even LogMeIn) but at the same time I gave TightVNC another try and for some reason it is now working perfectly! I can see the taskbar and the quality/speed is perfect!

I'll give it another try from a friend's house to make sure it works over the internet also.

    Thanks for your help! :)
