Got sky plus in 2 weeks ago. It was self installed and everything is super bar the fact that to record a programme it must be on the channell. when a programme is recording and you switch channel it only shows a blank screen on the channel you have switched to.

Can't understand what is wrong, any ideas?

Have you got 2 cables going to the back of the box from the dish? there are 2 tuners in it, thats why its possible to record one while watching the other channel.

Something is wrong there mate , Sky + should allow you to record something and watch something else at the same time , you could always try a system restore go into services the option 4 then push 1,0 & select

Yes have the 2 cables in place, its annoying really at this stage. i suppose its something small that i'm not doing right cause everything else is fine

seriously sounds like you have a cable connection fault. Disconnect one, check to see if you still have sat reception, if yes problem must be with other cable. if no reception check connections on this cable.

If you had reception with first cable, disconnect it now and connect 2nd cable, if you have reception with this second cable connected(make sure only one cable connected for this test) then it sounds like a box/tuner problem.

Reconnect two cables, if still not working properly, i suggest returning sky+ box.

Press Services, 4, 6 for Signal status. Is everything OK in there?

    Have you rebooted the box?

You could try a System Restore as suggested by chilli_pepper if all else fails.
