Sore thumb after range

Went to the range today for the second time after a long lay off (went on wednesday but before that hadnt swung a club since the summer). Anyway I wore the skin on the outside of my right thumb(near the top) pretty badly presumably from friction with the club. I am a right handed golfer and am relatively new to the game.

The strange thing is thid didnt happen on wednesday. Could this be a sign there is a problem with my grip or is it normal after not playing for a while and hitting two x-large buckets in a couple of days? The thing about it is I felt I did much better tonight. Hit the balls much better and consisitent than usual. Thanks.

Strange! I've never had that even though I like yourself would have hit two buckets after not going for a long time.
Does the grip feel wrong? Are you gripping it too tightly I wonder?

I think it is maybe too tight Gillie. I always try to keep it loose but as I approach the top of the backswing and begin the downswing my grip just tightens up. I intend to get some lessons off a professional coach so maybe he can help. Just wondering if this has happened to others or if it is a red flag indicating a bad grip.

    You probably know this one:
Take two clubs (say 6 & 7 iron).
Hold them together (as if your holding one club) and take 3 or 4 practice swings with them.
Then pick up your driver and swing. You should notice a difference.
The above gets rid of Tension. It may help.
If i'm going around a course or on the range I would do this at least twice.

Bottom line. Your swing should be fluid and relaxed. Not painful or awkward.
    Good luck!

I suffered badly with blisters on my left thumb, a glove sorted that out. Never ever had soreness in my right hand, regardless of how many balls I hit.

Sounds like your grip could be a problem alright!
