25,000 km on a moped. Time to scrap it?

Long time reader, first time poster on this here thread...

My problem is this: I bought a Peugeot Vivacity back in 2002 as a purely beat-the-traffic solution in Dublin. It has worked admirally over the last 5 years. A few minor hitches and services required but other than that I've nothing to complain about. Its done its job.

Now I have it in for a service. Been told its badly damaged, pistons shot or something...which I kinda expected cos its just getting old and seeing as our roads are pure s"&*te. Its going to cost me upwards of €350 to repair.
I've been thinking of upgrading to a 125 for a while now (I like the Suzuki RV125, or Honda Varadero 125). My question is this: does there come a stage where a 50cc really just can't hack it any more? Is 25,000 km in just over four years really just too much for it? What kind of mileage do people do on these things? I always said I'd drive it into the ground (get my value for money

Its decision time between splash the cash and hope for the best  OR upgrade?

Whats say you wiserly people?

well after nearly 5 years of the same bike you deserve to go out and splash a bit of cash on a new ride :)
you certainly got your money out of it

at this stage you would probably be better trying to get a 250 rather than a 125 as it will give you a bit more poke & allow you to do your full licence test on it

My first 50cc lasted until about 25k if I remember correctly before they said that the engine was dead on it, that only took me just over 3 years though I think.

Welcome to the Motorbikes thread alanscovich,
If you like the feel and handling of a scooter, how about you try a Vespa PX125 or PX200 (even better)? All the advantages of a small scooter with lots of power, reliability, and storage. Vespa PX's are ideal for city commuting and will even handle longer distances :D

here's a lovely picture of a some blokes nice silver PX200.

Well I've almost putup 25k km on my 125 Burgman and she better damn well not pack it in yet :D

I'd say for a 2 stroke 50cc,25k km is alot.

Thanks for all ur replys'. Think its time I ditched the Vivacity alright. :( RIP

Did some scoping today and I think I'll splurge on the Suzuki RV125Van Van. What do people think of these yokes? :

I know they ain't the most popular bikes but I think they defo look funky.
Good price as well at €2800 new.

Also does anyone know about the new licencing laws. I've been mopeding with a full category B licence (which includes the M category) for a few years now...hardly need to do the bloody theory test again to get an A1 provisional do I?

Yamaha Trailways (TW125) seem to be more popular over here and in europe, it's a very similar bike to the VanVan and looks like fun to drive. I like 'em both but might opt for the yamaha as parts might be easier to get as there are more for sale second-hand in Ireland.

I had a TW125, great bike the only thing is its (surprisingly) desirable to the theiving yobs....somebody went to great lengths to get their hands on mine. The yobs want to bash around the fields and I have been told they sometimes find themselves re-homed on a lovely farm where they never have to be taxed etc so no check of the serial no's etc
