Poor wireless DL speeds

I have recently upgraded to wireless broadband with bt with a netgear modem and router. My surfing speed is fine as is video streaming etc., but when i go to download any file the speed is terrible, it keeps decreasing until the download ceases completely. The signal is from the router is "excellent". Any help would be…

PS. I have used www.speedtest.net and got:

1400kbps download
217kbps upload
