    Hi All,

Here are the details of the National student archery championships which will be held in Carlow IT on the 17th of February.

This competition will be seperate from the League. There will be no team prizes, this will be an individual competiton run on a head to head basis.

    There will be four categories:
    1) Advanced - 40 cm face or 20 cm 3 spot
    2) Beginner - 60 cm face
    3) Barebow - 60 cm face
    4) Compound - 20 cm 3 spot

Archers will shoot a 60 arrow qualification in the morning, the same way as normal, shooting two lots of 30 arrows. The top 32 in each section will advance to the knockout stage. In the knockout stage each archer will be ranked based on their score in the morning, 1st will shoot off against 32nd, 2nd against 31st etc. with the winner advancing to the next round. Each match will be 12 arrows with a 1 arrow shoot off used in tied matches.

Due to the low numbers in the compound section the head to head will be run as a round robin with each archer shooting off against each other and the winner receiving 2 points. The top two will shoot off in the final match.

There will be prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each section except compound. There will be a prize for 1st and 2nd only in this section due to low numbers.

This will be a longer competition so because of this the shoot will start earlier than usual and breaks will be shorter because of time constraints.

Group 1: Starting at 9:30am Carlow IT, UCD, DCU, DIT

Group 2 Starting at 11am UL, GMIT, NUIG, NUIM

Each college will be limited to 12 places. More places may be available if some colleges dont use their full quota.

Due to extra costs for prizes and extra faces the price per archer for this tournament will be €10.

Could all colleges please email me as soon as possible with entries please. The earlier I know how many are in each category the easier it will make it for structuring the head to head rounds.

hope to see you all in February

Excuse my ignorance but is this the next competition?

Yes I think it is. UCD still haven't set a date for theirs

I also hate to be ignorant.
But is this in place of a normal carlow i.v.?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 321 ✭✭span

yes this is instead of our normal IV. Meaning there will only be 6 team Iv (or 5 if UCD dont get their finger out)

Just to clarify, the score from the qualifying round of 60 in the morning will go to the IV league score and then from that the face to face part is for the championship?

Since compounds are head2head all the way (no qualifying) I assume this also means that for compound the 1st 60 arrows from the first few head2heads count towards the IV league score?

Doesnt this suggest that the scores (including the qualifying 60 arrows) dont count towards the IV league?

This is completely seperate from the league. The qualification round will NOT count towards the league. This is the intervarsity championship and is a competition on it's own.

We cant be expected to get prizes for teams and for the head to head.

Compounds will be shooting 60 arrows in the morning but there will be no ranking for the round robin.

What's the earliest time the dublin colleges can make it?

Could the colleges in group 2 be ready for 10:30 so they can start shooting as soon as group 1 is finished

How about if the qualifying 60 arrows are also used as the IV team results and prizes are only given for the face 2 face.

I think that we would be loosing this IV unnecessarily.

Yeah I suppose there would be no problem in doing that.

so why are you running this competition instead of an iv?

it sounds kinda pointless to me especially since it will have no bearing on the national (college) league...

The morning is Still the IV with scores going towards the leauge.

    The afternoon is the Championships.

If you think its pointless then only do the the 60 arrows in the morning!

That'll be one saucer of milk for a mr toxof.

Everyone's gettin a bit worked up here, we need to chill out a wee bit.

I dont envy you organisin this one at all Span.

As regards what time people can get there, buses from Dublin leave at 7.15 or 9 o'clock, havin people there at 8.53 or 10.38, so it seems that the public transport option has dublin people there by 9. As far as people makin their own way goes, it's up to them to get there when they're told.

I dont like milk! Make it coke or Guinness and I'll be happier!

Why not do what alot of the country clubs do and rent a mini buss.

Only speaking for my own opinion, but I think this is a great idea. Give us all a bit of head2head experience and someting a wee bit different as well.

    Agreed Panserborn,

    Toxof
Hiring a minibus has been generally regarded as a bad idea in DIT's past due to the fact that quite a few people make their own ways to the shoots, meaning we'd be paying out a couple of hundred euro for a minibus for at most 7 or 8 people, when student bus fair to carlow and back is less than a tenner a head. The only way a minibus could be viable would be if another club went with us on said minibus.

Weren't you on the DIT committee once upon a time??? You should know these things.

Will the compound shooters be shooting 60 arrows? If their shooting a different amount then it can't count towards the IV league

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 84 ✭✭doogle deegan

Yes we will still shoot 60 arrows but they wont be ranked for the head to heads. The compounds are only using a different format for the knock out stage. In the morning we will shoot the same as every one else.

    Kadeshh,

If you think this is going to be a pointless competition then dont bother turning up.

I'm going to alot of effort here to introduce a new competition to the college season.
The scores in the morning will be used for the league, seeing as so many people view it as losing an IV rather than gaining a National Championship.

The maximum of each team has been increase to 12. I think I'll have a couple of places for guests so any non students who want to shoot let me know and I'll put you down on a first come first served basis.

All colleges probably wont fill 12 places so if anyone wants to bring more let me know. I'm sure it wont be a problem.

i was just wondering what time the shoot will be finished at. the bus driver wants to know a time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 321 ✭✭span

I'm hoping to have it finished by 6pm

We have another college entered for next saturday. Dundalk IT are sending 9 archers.

Good to see new clubs being set up.

Could all colleges have their entrants in by thursday please, so I can do up target lists

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 83 ✭✭SonicTheBadger

we dont practice till thursday. thursday night ok for team list?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 246 ✭✭baggins

Fair play to dundalk, kinda appeared out of the blue there.

Should have a list for you tomorrow Gav.

Any Change on the numbers front with the extra club

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 321 ✭✭span

    Thursday is fine Jermome.

There's no change to the numbers for each club, It's still 12. No clubs are filling their quota yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 321 ✭✭span

It looks like we're gonna have a full house for saturday. There's 75 booked in so far. Just waiting on the list from Maynooth.

Could everyone make sure to arrive on time. It's going to be a bit frantic trying to get the 60 arrows shot in the morning before the knockouts.

There is more than 32 in the advanced section so unfortunately not everyone will be shooting in the afternoon. Only the top 32 will qualify for the knockout round. In all other sections everyone will get to shoot at least one head to head match.

I'm not sure yet if I'll get time for a hot shot so I might get to keep the bunny for another couple of weeks :D
