Problems Tuning in the Wii on an old CRT

Has anyone else had a problem getting the scart connection that came with the Wii to work on an older television? It's a 28" JVC television my family bought back in 1994 that I inherited when they upgraded to a widescreen and it works with everything else I've ever tried it with.

When I plug my DVD into the Scart connection it takes over the screen no matter what channel the TV is on and tbh this was how I thought most scart units worked (i.e. once the device was switched on the TV became a dumb monitor).

If I go to Video-1 (EXT-1), I get a garbled version of the Wii's output. Video-2 gives me a blank screen (it's meant for s-video connections so I didn't expect it to) and when I try to just tune it in on a tv channel, I can't find it. What is unusual about this tuning is that I only seem to get to scroll through CH/CC values instead of VHF/UHF frequencies.

Anyone seen something like this before? Is the TV just too old to use the Wii with or am I just not tuning the channel properly? (lost the manual for the telly years ago) Do I need a proper SCART lead instead of the RGB cables and a converter?

maybe the Wii needs a 60hz refresh capable tv ?

PAL DVDs are 50hz so would'nt pose a problem

the auto switching to the channel is a scart feature that can be disabled on mos hardware eg Sky box

The scart may have to be moved around a bit!! It doesn't autotune on my telly(Xbox,DVD etc all do tho) so don't be worrying about that!! I would say wiggle around the Scart while on EXT1 and see if that works.

I just have it in EXT 2 on my TV and had no problems at all.
And if it were just for use with a 60hz TV I don't think he would get picture at all.I don't think I did when I tried 60hz on one of my friends old TV's.
But maybe you don't have the SCART in fully just try that.
Also I'm not sure if you can just tune a SCART device into any old channel.
I think that's what the EXT's are for, unless you mean you press the button on your remote to activate SCART on any channel, my last TV worked that way.

Have tried wiggling about the cable, checking connections and all that and nearly sure I've tuned channels to SCART devices before, think it might be a 60hz problem...

Maybe I just need to learn how to tune that telly properly! :P

Anyone know if the connection from the SCART cable for Wii to the telly is any different to the RGB -> SCART adapter connection?

if the wii needs a 60hz capable tv then thats probably it, you would get a garbled image as the tv wouldnt be able to refresh all the lines quick enough, does the scart connection still work with the dvd players the connection could be faulty either?

You can only tune to it if you have it on a RF cable.

The SCART will only automatically switch over if it has the pins necessary for that signal, and the composite adaptor is no good for that, you need proper SCART for that. It's Pin 8 that carries that autoswitch info, as I found out here:
    200102_scart_2.gif

But in short, either theres something wrong with your tellys scart socket or your composite-scart adaptor, as when you switch it to Video 1 it should work.

I was playin it on a 14/15 year old tv just last week. (12 inch screen!)

    [edit]
Does the tv have a v-sync knob? A TV I used to use for my Gamecube needed that adjusted for the signal to clear.

    Well:

    1. The SCART connection on my TV works with my DVD player so it's not a faulty SCART connection on my television.
    2. The composite adapter works on the television in my Mum's house so that work's.

If anyone out there knows a lot about TV's, the model in question is a JVC C-S2181ET. It does say 50Mhz on the back of the TV so I'm wondering if it's the screen refresh rate. If so, would an RF or S-video connector work or would I just get the same picture?

There's no v-sync button as far as I can see but like I said, I've never had a manual for it so some of the buttons are still a bit of a mystery. I found a place on-line selling PDF copies of the manual but I'd rather not have to shell out for it. It could be this alright as the picture scrolls downwards over itself (which I know could also be a refresh rate issue too).

What's interesting is that on my Mum's TV, one of the EXT 'channels' shows up like my screen on this TV whilst the other shows clear (without moving the scart connection).

I seem to remember a few years ago when I had a similar problem, poor or no reception from a scart device, there was a small pot behind a hole in the back of the telly for fine tuning the aux/av channel.

I accept no responsibility for how (or if) you use this info. But for God's sake be careful. Don't stick a screwdriver in any holes on your TV before making pretty sure there is what looks like an adjusting screw in there.

Sorted. I just remembered that I switched the settings to 60Mhz when I was in my Mum's house. Connected it to another portable TV in the house that was able to pick up reception, set it back to 50MHz and it worked! :)
