Difference with 360 on HD

I have my 360 hooked up to my LCD HD Ready TV the last couple of weeks. I have all the color input jacks in the correct place with the yellow one not being used. I have the switch set to HDTV. The console works fine, the quality seemed fine to me but nothing outstanding. When I say the quality was fine, I've never seen anything on HD to make comparisons.

Today I got a new cable so I could use it in my bedroom. I connected the Xbox up to my 28" ordinary Sony TV upstairs, put FIFA 2007 and the quality doesn't seem much different then it was on the LCD. Obviously it looks better on the LCD because it's a better TV but I certainly don't think it looks 3D or whatever HD is supposed to look like. A few people have said they saw the Xbox on HD and then found it hard to go back to playing it on an ordinary TV. So I found it strange that it doesn't seem anything special to me.

Obviously I think I must have it set up wrong. Is there a big noticeable difference with HD? Is there any tests I can do that will tell me if it's set up correctly?

    Cheers.

What output have you it set to on HD? 480p, 720p, 1080i or 1080p?

HD doesn't 'look 3D', HD is higher definition so it has a higher resolution, better defined more vibrant colours etc...

If you have PGR3, try to read the text on the pitwall (in red, with white text) at the start. I found it was impossible to read in SD but crystal clear in HD

I've found the difference between standard definition and high definition nowhere near as great as some people make it out to be. Sure it looks better but the 360 is far from unplayable on a sdtv. HD doesn't look that much better, the only noticable difference I've found is being able to read the text on screen alot easier on a hd screen.

I'd say you need to change your display/screen settings to 720p

I couldn't play on SD anyway.

Well ive played my 360 on two normal tv's and two hd tv's and i find the difference absolutely massive. I think the 360 is a waste of time on a normal tv. It might just be that the 360 didint look good on the two normal tv's i happened to be using though

    I don't know about that.

Before we got the big screen, I preferred to play the 360 on HD over a 17" computer screen rather than a 23" CRT such was the difference in detail (even on a much smaller screen).

A big screen HD screen just wipe the floor with a SD screen.

Well, to be honest, I'm enjoying the gameplay on my 360 on an SDTV. Sure da grafix r massif on a HD screen but I don't feel like I'm cheating on Microsoft by using my CRT. I'll get one eventually but I don't think it's absolutely necessary to have an HDTV to enjoy what the console has to offer

Well, I think if I didn't have a 360 I'd be terminally let down by the whole HD thing. Dvds through hdmi onto a nice tv are lovely and all. But not a whole new experience compared to a nice crt.

But games, I find, are seriously enhanced. Now, you're dead right - a 360 game on a SD still looks great and is totally playable.

But bombing down the street in Burnout Revenge at 250mph and being able to see the corner ahead in HD detail does confer a somewhat advantage.

I think it depends on the quality of your SDTV and HDTV to notice the differences. The difference between XBOX360 on my 42" Pioneer and 28" widescreen phillips is incredible. I may as well be playing XBOX mark I on the 28" whereas on the 42" the colours, shading, detail and sound are all fantastic! I refuse to play on the 28" anymore!!

I've played 360 on our SDTV or on a Compaq 20inch CRT pc monitor using the VGA cable. Honestly I wasn't really blown away by the difference, it took me a while to notice, I was a bit let down. I could read text easier...but I wouldn't wanna spend 1000 euro for that kind of improvement, not worth it IMO.

i had a 32" Hd tv in my house over christmas before my brother moved out and it definitely makes a difference. its so hard to go back to playing on a crappy tv afterwards

Well as someone who got a HDTV the other day, I dunno how I played in SD for so long, im really chuffed with it!

Pity the Wii looks ****e on it, may just get a VGA cable for that though!

No VGA cable for the Wii :(

Component is the best you can get.

This is the TV in the bedroom:

    and this is my LCD:
    http://www.pixmania.com/ie/uk/261319/art/toshiba/lcd-tv-37-94cm-16-9-hd-re.html

Obviously I was expecting a huge difference.

I'll try changing my settings to 720p when I get home. I can't remember what it's at atm, 1080i or 1080p.

See the thing is CRT TV through scart look alot better than a LCD TV through scart, so if your playing on an LCD tv through scart then you switch to HD you'll be really impressed, but if you go from CRT to a HDTV you wont be so impressed!

The lower quality does effect gameplay, especially with text (IE PGR or Dead Rising) and I found it harder to make out targets and such when playing on standard def.

OP, what other games do you have, I dunno how much of a difference you will see with FIFA because I have yet to play it and it is cross-platform so.

tbh all I tried in SD was FIFA as I had no time so I'm probably a bit premature with this thread. I have PGR3, GOW and Star Wars Lego II. I'll try them when I get the chance.

Well the small text in PGR3 was completly illegible for me on my SDTV. Granted, my SDTV is about 17" and my Monitor is 20" but there should still be a significant difference going from SD to HD even if you go from a big SD to a smaller HD TV.

Also, exactly what cables are you using? Componant for HD and Composite for SD? What cable did you get for your CRT?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,013 ✭✭✭✭eirebhoy

I'm not very knowledgable on cable names and the like. :) This is the cable I'm using on the SD TV:

The same as the cable for the HDTV but the different colour jacks obviously.

    Eh, no.

You see, red on SD is also red on HD. And blue on SD is also blue on HD. And as for green... well, you'll never guess.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,285 ✭✭✭Smellyirishman

Here is a quick example of the differences in PGR.

    Opening warning on SDTV.
    Opening warning on HDTV.

    Profile Loaded on SDTV.
    Profile Loaded on HDTV.

I have some more shots and could do other games but I think they should give you a rough idea of the differences you should see.

EDIT: That's composite and VGA btw.

I don't know about your TV but there's no input on my TV for green and blue cables. Red, White and Yellow is all I've ever seen on non-HD TV's.

Smellyirishman - Cheers for the pics. I just put in PGR3 and I do notice a difference. It's nowhere near as bad as those pics though. I've no problem reading the "your profile has been loaded" page. Maybe my Sony TV is just better quality than most SD TV's but it's a good few years old.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,285 ✭✭✭Smellyirishman

Yeah, there is probably some extra blur in those photos especially with being so close to the screen but they are a decent guide. The "profile loaded" one is readable on the CRT but infinitely more-so on the monitor. The obvious difference is definitely the intro warning, which goes from illegible to crystal clear.

That's an S-VHS/S-Video (plus audio) cable you're talking about. You posted a picture of an RGB component cable. An RGB component cable wouldn't work with your TV unless you had a red port, a green port and a blue port.

The cable I got off Ebay (the same cable that comes with the Xbox) is the cable I'm using on both TV's. I use the R, W and Y one's for my SD TV. No G or B ports.
