Iarnrod Éireann has said more people travelled by rail last year than ever before.

This is a 14% increase on the previous year.

Further improvements in rail services and infrastructure are planned for this year.

Iarnród Éireann 2006 journeys up 14%

    January 03, 2007 08:43
Last year, a record number of passengers used Iarnród Éireann services, with 14% more journeys taken compared to 2005.

Iarnród Éireann said over 43 million journeys were made across Iarnód Éireann's Intercity, DART and Commuter services, compared to 37.7 million journeys the previous year.

Since 2004, passenger numbers have increased by almost 25%, or 8.5 million journeys.

Iarnród Éireann's said the rise in passenger growth was down to increased frequency of Intercity services and commuter services, the completion of the DART upgrade in Dublin, and as investment programmes paid off and strengthened the performance of the rail service.

Among other developments, Iarnród Éireann's said this year hourly services between Cork and Dublin will start and the first of the new 150-carriage intercity railcar fleet for the rest of the intercity network will be introduced. The Docklands station will open in March in Dublin, with stations for new communities at Adamstown and Phoenix Park.

    Iarnród Éireann hits passenger high
    From:ireland.com
    Wednesday, 3rd January, 2007

Iarnród Éireann recorded an all-time passenger high in 2006,with more than 43 million journeys made on its rail system.

The figures include Dart, Intercity and commuter services across the country, and represent a 14 per cent increase over the previous record of 37.7 million journeys in 2005.

The latest surge in growth has been attributed to strong customer response to service improvements, including an increase in Intercity and commuter services, and the Dart upgrade.

"This record growth, which will ensure we remain the EU's fastest-growing railway, is set to continue over the coming years, as we deliver on the full scale of development of our network and services outlined under Transport 21," a spokesman for the company said.

"In this task, we will ensure that we also continue our record in Iarnród Éireann of having the strongest performance amongst recipients of capital funding for infrastructure in delivering on time and on or under budget."
