Upgraded Eircom Broadband problem

    Hi,

We recently had our 3MB/384K Eircom broadband lines at our 2 offices upgraded to 6Mb/512K. The thing we have noticed is that ping times to websites have increased from approx 20ms to 50ms. Accessing websites isn't causing us a problem but this increase has affected our VPN connection between the offices (ping times between offices are around 90ms). Has anyone experienced a similar problem? The VPN was performing better under the old 3Mb/384K lines.

    thanks.

Yep the Eircom business ADSL products have more interleaving, giving you a slower ping response.

You could get on to them about it, but I'm not sure if they can/do change it per request, also if you are far from the exchange then it may not work without the interleaving although I'm sure there are lots of knowledgeable people on boards who can clarify that.

Did you check your line stats before the upgrade to see if they could handle the increased speeds?

There is usually a facility within the router/modem to tell you your line stats it differs with each model.

    This link might be helpful:

    Some useful information here:

Anyone who is considering upgrading their speed really should check their line stats in advance as the extra speed seems to put a lot of pressure on the line and the line while 'perfect' at the current speed can deteriorate significantly after the upgrade.
