Trains in England

    Hi guys,

Flying into London Gatwick next Thursday and spending the night in London, before getting the train down to Southampton on the Friday at around midday. Last time I was in London I bought an all-day travel-card which only cost me about a fiver at Gatwick, got me into the city and unlimited travel on the tube for the day, does anyone know if this offer is still available?

Also, as regards the train on the Friday morning from London to Southampton, does anyone have any suggestion or ideas as regards price? I've seen this MegaTrain site which quotes me £72 for the six of us who are travelling, for a one-way ticket (don't need a return as I'm flying home from Bournemouth), which isn't too bad at all really. Anybody used them before? Is it just a matter of getting a reservation number online and quoting it at the barrier, or is there more to it?

Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated. Cheers!

Did u miss my rip off Britain rant this morning? All day metro tickets are as you remember. My advice would be make sure u purchase train tickets in advance. This post from Ressem explains how to get around the postcode system. If you buy them in person you can probably still haggle the ticket agents for a lower fare. Don't use their ticket machines as they're non-negotiable and usually overpriced.

    You did well...

Single fare into London on the train from Gatwick is around £9 with First Capital Connect into Kings Cross, the Gatwick Express will cost you £23.50 return into Victoria.

Zone 1-6 travelcard for London transport is £6.70 now, well worth getting as it covers night buses as well.

Yeah I'm almost starting to doubt myself. Maybe the ticket was just for London city itself and we just hopped on the train from Gatwick-Victoria assuming it was for that too, don't remember any ticket inspectors either...

    :D
