Ram problem

    Hi all,

    Have a little problem with ram.
    Have a Dimension 4700 about 2 yrs old
    P4, 3GHZ, 2X256mb RAM, 160Gb HD...

    I added 2x1024mb recently and it has since been acting wierd.

    The original ram is DDR 2 3200, these were installed in slots 1 & 3.

    I got 2 x ddr2 4200 in error but tried them anyway.

    I moved the 2x512 to slots 1&2 and put the 2x1024 into slots 3&4.

    Since then my PC has restarted middle way through a task ( writing an email for example).

    Now I know that I should have 3200 speed ram in there but I think I remember someone saying that a higher speed ram wont matter, it will only run at the same speed as the original ram though. (could be wrong here though).

    The new ram is OCZ 4200 DDR2.

    The computer sees the ram in the BIOS, likes it as it doesn't fail memory bank test on startup. The computer seems to be mving a little quicker, (though I expected a few more horse power after spending several hundred quid.

    Any thoughts...

    I moved the 2x512 to slots 1&2 {1+3} and put the 2x1024 {256meg?} into slots 3&4. {2+4}

    If you original ram was in slots 1+3 then odds are your dual channel slots alternate. If not Dell suck more then I could have believed.

    Well there's your problem right there... The fact that the original RAM was in slots 1 & 3 should have been a hint
