Heading to California in February for a holiday. My current passport was issued in 2000. Does anyone know if I need to get the new chipped passport?

I recently got a new chipped (British) passport. This entitles me to the Visa Waiver program. Therefore, I don't need a Visa to go to the US.

If you don't have a new (machine readable) passport you will need a Visa. It may be worth your while monetarily getting a new passport as it will cost a hundred or so for the Visa, and a hundred or so for the new passport. So if you get the new passport you just pay once.

As long as you have the machine-readable one, then you are fine. You can continue to use it up until it expires (though as Gordon mentioned, you might as well get the new one sooner). You are allowed to stay up to 90 days on the Visa Waiver Program.

    Machine-readable passport.
