TV Licence

    Hello,

Not sure this is the right place. Please move if its not.

Basically, I am moving in with my bf soon. A few weeks ago he got a letter saying he would be fined if he didnt get a licence (ejit).

I personally think its the greatest scam ever, but if I am moving in, I am going to pay it - dont want any fine.

Anyways, he since got another letter. He tore it up. Didnt read it. My question is, if I pay it now will he still be fined? Should I put my name or both our names on the licence? Or does it go by address?

    Thanks.

They cannot fine you if they cannot prove there is no TV. Eventually an inspector will arrive out looking to see the TV.
Just go to your post office and hand over the scandalous amount. If you didn't have a TV before today then there would have been no need for a licence...

It's by address but I guess it would have been handy to know what the last letter they sent to him said.

    SJones,
Could you please move it back for more replies, as am confused as to what to do or whats going to happen? Would rally value more opinions.

Will I be charged, or back dated now Im living with him (just moved in).

Will me getting one solve his problem of being caught without one?

    Thanks!

In my student days we got caught (inspector at the door) and they just let us pay the licence fee without any fines. That was about 2 years ago. We had the wonderful excuse of having just moved in 2 weeks prior and not having had the time to go to the post office

    *shifty eyes*

The Broadcasting board is the best place for this thread.

Just to enquire..... how long is the other half living in the house?

If he ignores the posted demands after the inspector has been, he will be liable to go to court. The law is tighter than a duck's proverbial in water. First offence can be upto €635.
Failure to produce evidence of a television licence to an inspector can result in a court appearance and on conviction, you can receive a substantial fine. People who have been fined and who have breached court orders directing them to pay their television licence can be imprisoned.

If you personally paid a TV licence in your old place, you can get the licence transferred free of charge. But as he is in arrears, you will need to check with the Post Office when paying.

He can fight the law, but the law will win, frankly.

If the inspector called in year one - and the owner paid up straight afterwards. What happens if that person doesnt renew immediately ie. waits until another visit from the tv license inspector??

Easy answer (before the vultures with morals start replying) — get the licence in your own name at the EXACT address An Post wrote to. Hey presto, problem solved. Have seen this problem/solution with tenants before.

Of course, in 12 months time, it'll be you they start writing reminder to.

But if you don't pay immediately on receipt of the reminder - just wait for them to call - will they just let you pay again - or fine you?

I'd imagine that once the licence is bought, that's the last you'll hear from the inspectors.

    Moved to Broadcasting board.
