My favourite anti-virus is stopping its free service on January 16th, which means I'll be buying a subscription. There are people who's computers I maintain though that wouldn't pay for an anti virus. Is there any alternative I can give them?

Another free anti-virus program is Avast, I find it excellent ...

AVG are always trying to push their paid-for anti-virus software, so it always takes a bit of time to get to the free one on their website. In the case of the upgrade, on that notice that comes up on the screen if you scroll down in small writing it has a bit about if you want to download AVG 7.5 Free. You download the file linked above, then the important thing is you click 'Repair Installation' when a prompt for that comes up, then it should all work nicely for you.

BTW have a look at their Anti-Spyware software also available for free download.

Sorry for going slightly off topic....
I've always used this AV and find it excellent. I dont know how many friends PC's I have installed it on.
The question I wanted to ask was, has anyone bought the full version? If so can they advise if the version expiries happen as often? Does anyone here use it in a corporate environment?

Avast Home Edition is what I regularly use & deploy on other systems.

It is free but with a condition that you must (freely) re-register it once the license runs out which typically lasts a year.

All it is just putting in name and e-mail addy to get a new serial key.

I used Avira Anti-vir when AVG refused to update for me a couple of months ago, haven't looked back. :)

With regard to AVG making it hard to find the Free version - Save yourself a bit of time, just grab it from Download.com - It usually needs an update, but it's a lot less hassle.

    Avira Antivir FTW!
A rather obscure, but excellent antivirus system. The professional edition has versions for other systems such as Mail gateways, File servers, Proxy servers and Linux workstations.
The PersonalEdition has the classic version which is free, and the premium version which you pay for (and includes antispyware and a few of the features from the professional edition).
Avira also offer an Internet Security suite which includes a firewall in the package.

I bought 2 x licences of AVG + Firewall Pro & have had it on 2 pc's for the last 18mths with only one slight problem, which I emailed their tech support team about & they replied with a solution (which actually worked :D ) within the hr - excellent product & customer service :) !

Just to let those using old software like myself:

AVG Free 7.5 doesn't like Roxio CD-burning software [version 5 anyway]. During installation, I was given a link to a patch that would fix me up. That didn't work -- the patch says it's the wrong version.

I'll just upgrade the software to get around it.
