Accidently overwritten file

    Hi everyone

My brother has a problem, nothing too major, but an annoyance. He is currently playing Grand Theft Auto - San Andreas

He has two save games, one where he is doing his 'real game', the whole way through without cheats, the second is just a 'mess game', where he uses cheats, explores the area and well... gets 'chases' from the police!

As you may have guessed, he overwrote his 'real' slot with his 'mess' game, therefore his considerable progress in his 'real' game is gone

Now I know if a file has been deleted off the computer, and considering nothing has been saved since, there is a small chance of getting that file back. Now, I know this situation is different as the file doesn't actually get deleted, just the information changed, but I am wondering is there any way at all of getting the original 'real' game back?

This has happened today and we made sure GTA wasn't touched after, just in case there is a way

I don't think this is for the GTA forum, as it is a computer problem, and not a GTA specific problem. Mods feel free to move if you feel it is better over there

If anyone knows a possibility, please reply, help would be most grateful, though I am sure that it is impossible.

    Thanks

why dont you do a system restore?

If you are unaware of the idea it is a tool in windows xp that allows your computer to roll back to exactly how it was a number of days ago, the more space on your hardrive the sooner you can go back usually.
Someone who knows more will help you out in a bit im sure, but there is hope

System Restore won't have catalogued the file.

    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/plan/faqsrwxp.mspx
System Restore monitors only a core set of specified system and application file types (e.g. .exe, .dll etc)...
System Restore does not monitor changes to or recover users' personal data files such as documents, graphics, e-mail, and so on.

OP, unless you have a backup those games are gone.

try restoration.exe rest2514 to see if it finds it,

but chances almost certain are it's over written and the more you use the PC the more certain this is

There is software you can use to retreive the file. The file system is unlikely to have overwritten the file, just left it and written the new file somewhere else and hidden the original (this setup is quicker for disk access). Use said software to retreive deleted file, search the results by name or time and with luck (ie: you have lots of empty disk space and don't download, delete and repeat like myself) your file should still exist in the magnetic bowels of your HD.

ps Might be more trouble than it's worth for a game file though that's up to you entirely.

The file system is unlikely to have overwritten the file,
This would be true if the file had been deleted. But it hasn't, it's just been updated with new info, unfortunately in this case the wrong info. Unless there was some way of rolling back the data, the saved game is lost.
