    Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anyone can help me out with my choice here.

Im hoping to do Aero Eng in UL this coming year, but have a few questions Id appreciate if anyone could answer :)

Firstly, exactly how intense is it on Maths and Physics. I didnt HL Maths for the Leaving but did not particularly find it easy, so finished more-or-less mid-table in the results. Ive heard it is very intense, and also there is quite a lot of applied maths - which Ive no experience of. Is there a strong drop-out rate, or any who fail at the end?

Secondly, whats the banter like down there? I visited the Open Day in '05 and loved what I saw; just wouldnt mind some thoughts from current students. (I also hear the night-life in Limerick is great? :D).

Thirdly, Is Co-op in Year 3 available to everyone, or is it just a select few? Do the best in class get the best places or are you given the choice etc?

If anyone wants to take the time to answer those questions Id really appreciate it! :D

    Cheers,

    DD.

Not an engi in the strict sense of the word, but wrt Co-Op, all students get to go, not just the best :)

Tbqh, the system in UL is a joke. There doesn't seem to be any sense in how folk get put forward for certain jobs over others [well, from what I've seen and heard]

You don't have a choice in your co-op, unless you organise it yerself.
    First offer you must accept.
    Kinda crappy I know. :(

In a word yes and in another word no!
You finish Math in 3rd year as to say you have no math class in particular but there is a fair amount of calculations and applied maths outside the particular subject.

Yes there is a high enough drop out rate im afraid, especially the semester straight after co-op in Year 3. I did mech (Shutup Kai) which is hand in hand with Aero except for 4th year and a few specialist subjects. It is intense alright but if you find how planes work and the general concept of flight and all that jazz interesting you will get through.

Co op is in end of year 2 and the start of year 3. Everyone has to get placed(whether it be in Aero or any other Engineering discipline) First come first serve im afraid. Boeing,Airbus,Rolls Royce and Lufstansa and a few others are the cream of the job placements. It does matter about your results but also about your interview technique.

Well if you are a part of boards this mad crew will certainly hold your hand - any excuse for beers and loads of clubs and good crack as well falling out the pub with your college bag hanging off ya

Sorta conversation over on the Engineering page a while back. (might be helpful)

Im in 1st year aero, and I love it so far...the modules in 1st semester of 1st year are: Maths, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, Mechanics and Computing.

Maths is mostly leaving cert stuff, but a little bit more advanced and in depth. If you want to see what kind of stuff yoy will be doing, you can get past exam papers here: http://www.staff.ul.ie/natalia/MA4001.html

Chemistry is also more or less leaving cert stuff, so if you've done that you're fine...

electrical eng is like the electrical part of physics, but way more advanced and I find it very difficult...

Mechanics is mostly like LC applied maths, but you'll be eased into it fairly slowly so if you've never done it before don't worry...

Computing is using matlab, and this was completely new to me so I am struggling with it...

The only thing I will say is don't let yourself fall behind. As soon as you don't go to lectures and don't do tutorial sheets etc. you'll struggle. If you put the work in and go to lectures and tutorial's (I wish I had) you'll be fine.

Apart from the course, I love Limerick...I know so many new people and the nightlife is pretty good...If I was making my decision again, I wouldn't change it for the world, I'm so glad I chose aero in UL.
